Da Nang closes roads to allow 3,500 'steel men' to compete at the highest level

IRONMAN's 10-year journey to Vietnam

On May 9, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Da Nang City in collaboration with Sunrise Events Vietnam (SEV) opened the IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang 2025 competition with more than 3,500 athletes from over 70 countries and territories competing. The event marked the 10-year milestone of IRONMAN's presence in Vietnam.

The tournament featured legendary triathlon athletes such as Mark Allen and Yee Sze Mun, inspiring athletes and many younger generations.

IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang 2025 with the theme "Decade of Glory - where every finish line is a new beginning", hopes to spread the spirit of perseverance, the desire to reach far and the pride of global connection, the values that have made Vietnam a favorite destination of the sports community.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms. Nguyen Thi Anh Thi, Vice Chairwoman of Da Nang City People's Committee, said that this is the most notable and anticipated sporting event of the year. Da Nang City is very proud to continue to be the host of this largest event in Southeast Asia. In particular, 2025 marks the 10-year journey of IRONMAN 70.3 coming to Da Nang, Vietnam.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang 2025 competition will last until May 11 at Son Thuy Beach (Ngu Hanh Son District). This year's event will also welcome more than 160 All-World Athletes (AWA) athletes, affirming its international prestige and appeal to the world's elite athletes.

To complete the IRONMAN 70.3, athletes must go through a 1.9 km ocean swim, 90 km bike ride and 21 km run. At the end of the competition, 30 excellent athletes won tickets to participate in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Spain in 2025.

This sports festival features a number of other sporting events, such as SUNRISE SPRINT Vietnam - a short-distance triathlon with 750m swimming, 20km cycling and 5km running, for beginners, to have the opportunity to test their skills or prepare for longer distance competitions.

In addition, the IRONKIDS Vietnam competition also returns with duathlon and triathlon categories for children aged 5-15, to encourage the younger generation to pursue an active and healthy lifestyle. In addition, the Newborns Vietnam Run Out charity race lasts 3 days, with the aim of raising awareness about care and medical support for newborns.

For the first time at a triathlon competition in Vietnam, IRONMAN 70.3 Da Nang will integrate mixed reality (MR) technology through cooperation with technology company tagSpace, bringing a completely new interactive digital experience and expanding access for athletes and fans.

Road closure for IRONMAN 70.3 Vietnam competition

Da Nang City Police have also just issued a notice about the time and location of traffic bans, cuts, and traffic diversions to serve the competition.

Specifically, the Director of Da Nang City Police issued a plan to ensure absolute safety for athletes, security and order, traffic safety, fire prevention and rescue during the event.

Notably, Da Nang City Police will organize the regulation, guidance on cutting and dividing traffic flows on key routes and intersections on the competition route as follows:

On May 10, the IRONKIDS and SUNRISE SPRINT competitions will take place from 5:30 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. at the following locations: Vo Nguyen Giap Street (from Phan Tu to Nguyen Duc Thuan), Truong Sa Street (from Nguyen Duc Thuan to the intersection between Da Nang and Quang Nam). The entire lane on the coast will be used for athletes to compete, Da Nang City Police will guide vehicles to continue to circulate in both directions on the remaining lane (the residential side of the above route).

On May 11, the IRONMAN 70.3 competition will take place from 5:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Truong Sa, Vo Nguyen Giap, Hoang Sa, Le Duc Tho, and Nguyen Tat Thanh streets. Athletes will travel through the intersections of Hoang Sa - Le Duc Tho, Yet Kieu - Le Duc Tho, and the entrances to beaches, hotels, restaurants, and resorts. The entire lane adjacent to the sea will be used by athletes for competition. Da Nang City Police will guide vehicles to continue two-way traffic on the remaining lane (adjacent to the residential area of the above route).

In particular, during the competition, some routes will be proactively blocked or cut off when athletes are passing through; the police force will flexibly open the road for normal traffic when there are no athletes.
