This year's 10th grade math exam in Da Nang surprised many students by the absence of a math problem using Viet's theorem, which was considered a "specialty" in previous years' exams.
Candidate Tran Thanh An (student of Tran Hung Dao Secondary School, Hai Chau District) said he was completely surprised that this year's math test did not have a Viet question.
This makes the overall difficulty somewhat lower than previous years. However, the difficulty is still clearly shown in the last part of the test, especially question 4c in the geometry section.

According to Thanh An's analysis, the exam tends to distribute difficult questions scatteredly instead of arranging them in order of increasing complexity as usual.
Some applied problems require students to carefully read the data and clearly identify the requirements of the problem. An gave an example: "The problem about fireworks tickets has a lot of data related to discounts and totals. If you are not careful, it is easy to misunderstand the main points, leading to difficulty in solving."
Sharing the same opinion, candidate Le Thanh Hung (Nguyen Van Linh Secondary School, Cam Le District) shared that he and his friends spent a lot of time practicing the Vietnamese exercises because they thought they would definitely have them. "I didn't expect the test to not be of this type. However, the test was not easy. Question 4c in the geometry section was really difficult. Although the applied math problems were interesting, they were easy to confuse if you didn't identify the correct keywords in the test" - candidate Hung analyzed.
With the math test, many candidates were surprised.
From a professional perspective, Ms. Tran Thi Thuong - Math teacher at Tay Son Secondary School (Hai Chau District) assessed that this year's Math exam closely followed the orientation of competency assessment according to the 2018 GeneralEducation Program. The structure of the exam was built exactly as the orientation that the Department of Education and Training of Da Nang had announced in advance, helping schools to be more proactive in teaching and reviewing.
In particular, this year's exam reduced the number of pure calculations, instead increasing the number of problems related to real life such as probability problems, statistics, application of quadratic formulas in right triangles or problems about solids. The fact that there were no Vietnamese questions like every year was a surprise to both teachers and students.
"With real-life problems, if students have practiced a lot, they will not be surprised. However, if they do not read the questions carefully and do not analyze the main points, they will still encounter difficulties," Ms. Thuong commented.
Regarding differentiation, Ms. Thuong said that the exam has about 70% of questions at the recognition and comprehension level, the application and high-level application questions mainly fall into sections such as questions 3b, 5b and especially geometry question 4c - considered a big challenge for many students.
With such a structure, students with good academic performance, a solid grasp of basic knowledge and familiarity with many types of reference questions will easily achieve a score of 7 or higher. However, Ms. Thuong noted that even with questions at the comprehension level, if students are not careful, do not check the conditions after solving the equation or make mistakes with the signs, they can easily lose points.
"The common test score will be between 5 and 7 points. To achieve a higher score, students must have a really solid knowledge and problem-solving skills," Ms. Thuong added.
