In the last days of April, Dak Lak is entering the final stage of the 2024-2025 dry season. The hot weather has caused the water levels of lakes and dams in the province to decrease rapidly, including many lakes, dams, and irrigation works that have run out of water.
To combat drought for crops, Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management One Member Limited Liability Company has proactively regulated water sources from places with water to dry areas and used pumping systems to utilize the remaining water sources under lakes and dams to combat drought for crops, minimizing damage caused by drought.
Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management One Member Limited Liability Company is currently managing 252 reservoirs in the province. Through monitoring and evaluating the company's water reserves, it is shown that this year, due to the prolonged dry season, up to now, of the total number of reservoirs managed by the company, about 15 are at normal water levels, 81 are at 70 to 90% water levels, 62 are at 50 to 70% water levels, 62 are below 50% water levels and 32 are dry.
The water level of a reservoir in Buon Don district has dropped.
Meanwhile, as of April 21, basically the works managed by the company have completed irrigation for the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop. Only in some areas where people sowed late, the irrigation service time is about 15-20 days away from completion, such as Ea Sup Thuong Lake, Ea Sup district, which still has one irrigation session; Ea Kao Lake, Buon Ma Thuot city; Buon Joong Lake, Cu M'gar district; Buon Triet Lake, Buon Tria Lake, Lak district; Krong Buk Ha Lake, Krong Pac district, Ea Rot Lake, Ea Kar district, etc.
Mr. Trinh Quoc Bao, Deputy Director of Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management One Member Limited Liability Company, said: Based on weather forecasts, right from the beginning of the irrigation season, the company has directed its affiliated units, based on the water source situation and water demand at the works, to develop plans to prevent and combat drought and water shortages for all the works the company is managing.
In particular, there are projects at risk of drought at the end of the season that still have resources to fight drought, including 44 projects, including 34 reservoirs and 10 dams at risk of drought with a total area to fight drought of about 3,330 hectares of crops, including 2,500 hectares of rice, 811 hectares of industrial crops and 18 hectares of flowers.
People use pumps to take advantage of the remaining water in lakes, dams, and irrigation canals to fight drought for rice cultivation.
Due to proactively storing water, regulating irrigation water scientifically and implementing water-saving irrigation right from the beginning of the crop, as of April 21, in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, only 7/44 projects, including three reservoirs and four dams mainly concentrated in Buon Don district, Buon Ho town, Lak district, and Krong Nang district, have been implementing drought prevention measures with a total area of about 1,058 hectares, including 864 hectares of rice, 191 hectares of industrial crops and 3.45 hectares of crops.
Of which, there are two projects in Buon Don district, the branch of Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management One Member Limited Liability Company, Buon Don district has completed the drought prevention work from March 1 to 31, 2025. The drought prevention measure is to regulate water from Buon Joong reservoir, Cu M'gar district to the irrigation area of Ea Ne dam and Cay Sung dam in Buon Don district. Up to now, the drought prevention work has been completed with a total drought prevention area of 600 hectares and no area has been burned.
A project in Buon Ho town, a branch of the company, has completed drought prevention work from April 8 to April 14, 2025. The drought prevention measure is to regulate water from Phu Khanh reservoir, Krong Buk district to Buon Trinh dam, Buon Ho town. To date, the drought prevention work has been completed with a total drought-protected area of 191 hectares.
A project in Krong Nang district, the branch has completed the drought prevention work. The drought prevention measure is to dredge the sediment in the channel and the suction tank of Bay Thien pumping station (Bay Thien lake) to serve irrigation for 108.8 hectares of rice. Currently, the project is still serving irrigation, expected to be completed in 10-15 days.
Currently, there are three projects being implemented to combat drought with a total area of about 158.94 hectares in Lak district, including: La Tang Po dam in Yang Tao commune, with a drought-fighting area of 114 hectares of rice. The company's branch regulates water from Buon Cuor pumping station to supplement La Tang Po stream and pumps it into the sluice with two pumps, with a capacity of 20 CV, to serve drought prevention.
Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management One Member Limited Liability Company and Lak district people pump water to fight drought for crops.
Buon Tung 3 Lake, Buon Triet Commune, drought-resistant area is 29.94 hectares of rice. The company branch uses two 20 CV oil pumps to pump water from the remaining capacity of the lake to the canal system of the field to serve the people in drought-resistant.
Buôn Duh Mah Lake, Dak Phoi Commune, has a drought-resistant area of 14.6 hectares of rice. The drought-resistant measure is to pump water from the remaining capacity of the lake using two 20 CV oil pumps.
Pumps are used to fight drought in Lak district. Lak branch borrows from local people to carry out pumping and drainage work.
Currently, Dak Lak is entering the final stage of the 2024-2025 dry season, with intense hot weather causing water sources in many lakes and dams in the area to dry up quickly. Among them, Ea Sup Thuong Lake , Ea Sup District, which is the largest irrigation lake in Dak Lak Province, is also experiencing water shortages.
Mr. Pham Quoc Tuan, Director of the branch of Dak Lak Province Irrigation Works Management One Member Limited Liability Company in Ea Sup District, said that the unit is managing seven reservoirs in Ea Sup District with a total irrigation area of nearly 8,500 hectares, of which Ea Sup Thuong Lake has a water surface area of 1,400 hectares with a water volume of over 146 million m3 , of which the irrigation capacity is about 136 million m3 , ensuring irrigation water for about 8,300 hectares of crops of all kinds in the communes of Cu Mlan, Ea Bung, Ya To Mot, Ea Le and Ea Sup Town.
Since the Ea Sup Thuong Lake irrigation system was built in 2001 and put into operation in 2005, it has turned the Ea Sup plain into one of the largest rice granaries in Dak Lak province. The quality of rice has also been affirmed through the association of certified rice production. As of 2024, Ea Sup district has a planned rice growing area of over 10,783 hectares, of which 7,200 hectares are specialized in wet rice cultivation; the communes with the largest two-crop rice growing areas are: Ya To Mot, Ea Rok, Ea Le, Ea Bung and Cu Mlan.
Thanks to the stable water source of Ea Sup Thuong Lake, the average rice yield in Ea Sup district is 6.7-7 tons/ha, in some places reaching 10 tons/ha.
Mr. Nguyen Tan Tuan in Cu Mlan commune, Ea Sup district has just harvested 1.8 hectares of rice with a yield of 10 tons/ha. Currently, he is raising ducks on the fields that have just been harvested to increase his income. Mr. Tuan happily said: Before Ea Sup Thuong Lake was built, local people only produced one rice crop, so life was difficult. Since Ea Sup Thuong Lake was put into use, people have produced two rice crops, many families even produce three rice crops a year with an average yield of 7-8 tons/ha/crop, many families take good care of the rice and the yield reaches 10 tons/ha/crop.
Besides, Ea Sup is a border district, the weather is harsher than many other localities in the province, but thanks to the Ea Sup Lake project, in the dry season every year, the rice fields of Ea Sup district have never lacked water. Thanks to that, the life of my family as well as the people in the district has been constantly improved and enhanced in all aspects.
Thanks to the stable water source of Ea Sup Thuong Lake, the average rice yield in Ea Sup district is 6.7-7 tons/ha, in some places reaching 10 tons/ha.
However, because the project was built and put into use more than 20 years ago, part of the lake bed has been filled up, and partly due to the hot weather this year, the water level of Ea Sup Thuong Lake has dropped below the dead water level by 1.7m. Fortunately, most of the irrigated rice fields of Ea Sup Thuong Lake in Ea Sup district have ripened and are entering the harvest season, so there is no impact. Only a small area of late sowing in Ia Rve commune needs another irrigation period, so the company branch is considering using the remaining water reserve of Ea Sup Thuong Lake to irrigate the entire area, avoiding drought and fire that would cause damage to farmers.
Directly inspecting the drought situation and directing drought prevention and control work in Ea Sup district, Mr. Trinh Quoc Bao, Deputy Director of Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management One Member Limited Liability Company, said that currently, in addition to utilizing the remaining water source of Ea Sup Thuong Lake to serve the final irrigation for the rice fields in Ia Rve commune, the company is also implementing drought prevention at seven projects with a total area of over 1,000 hectares in Krong Nang and Lak districts, Buon Ho town...
Currently, we are entering the final stage of the 2024-2025 dry season, so the weather is quite hot, and drought continues to occur. Therefore, the company continues to closely monitor the weather and water resources at the projects to have timely drought prevention plans with the motto "while there is water, there is bailing" to minimize the damage caused by drought.
Farmers in Dak Lak province irrigate their coffee crops for the last time in the 2024-2025 dry season before the rainy season arrives.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Lak province, the province currently has 69,360 hectares of short-term crops for the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop and 373,772 hectares of perennial crops. Based on the weather forecast for the 2024-2025 dry season, the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee has directed the provincial agricultural sector, the Dak Lak Irrigation Works Management One Member Limited Liability Company and local authorities to proactively implement drought prevention measures.
To ensure water sources against drought, right from the beginning of the dry season, units have increased dredging of water intakes, canal systems, and raised spillway thresholds with sandbags; implemented advanced irrigation solutions such as water-saving irrigation and drip irrigation; at the same time, farmers in some localities in the province have also proactively dug ponds and drilled wells to find water sources for irrigation of crops. Thanks to that, up to now, there has been no damage caused by drought in Dak Lak province.
