United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has just stated that peace negotiations to end the conflict in Ukraine cannot take place at this time.
In an interview published in the Spanish daily El Pais on May 9, Secretary-General Guterres said he did not see the possibility of achieving a comprehensive ceasefire or peace negotiations at the present time, as both Russia and Ukraine believe they can win.
Assessing the mediation efforts of China and Brazil in the conflict in Ukraine, Mr. Guterres said that achieving peace is not yet possible, and expressed hope that peace negotiations can take place in the future towards a just peace in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
The Secretary-General also said the UN is in dialogue with both sides to resolve specific issues, most importantly an agreement to allow the export of grain from Ukraine and food and fertilizer from Russia via the Black Sea. Mr. Guterres also expressed concern about the situation around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, but he said the risk of nuclear escalation was very low.
