Recently, a couple in Michigan (USA) discovered a mysterious passageway that is more than 6 meters deep and dates back more than 100 years right under the floor of their house.
Hayley Gilmartin and her husband, Trevor, who live in Lake Huron - an area on the border between the US and Canada - discovered the strange water-filled room when they removed an old, broken hot tub in their home. The mysterious basement room is connected to another large body of water by a nearly 6-foot-long pipe.
The space is filled with water but almost empty.
The removal of a broken hot tub led to this discovery.
Despite their fears, the homeowners used specialized scuba gear to explore the secret passageway. “We went underwater and found the other end of it was a giant tunnel,” Gilmartin, 30, told Jam Press, adding that they couldn’t pump out the water because the room was completely submerged in water from Lake Huron and the rivers that connect it.
The dark concrete space was nearly empty, except for a supporting column and a wood-paneled wall that they believed connected to the tunnel system.
The couple bought the property in 2020 and only recently learned that some of their neighbors also had similar tunnels underneath their homes.
Nearly a century ago, Lake Huron and the adjacent St. Clair River became waterways used by criminal organizations to smuggle alcohol north of the border. According to experts, as much as 75 percent of the Prohibition-era liquor smuggling occurred in this area.
After discovering the house’s secret connection to its grim history, Gilmartin posted the couple’s “diving adventures” on TikTok, which garnered millions of views in a matter of days.
“I think anyone who finds a giant manhole under their house in total darkness would find it spooky,” Hayley told Newsweek.
The homeowner said their immediate plan is to remove the wooden wall in the water room and will continue to update more videos as they explore this secret passageway.
“We’re going to continue to explore it, and if we can, we’re going to drain it so we can create a games room or bowling alley down there,” Gilmartin shared.
