Although the time of his death has not been officially announced, many sources believe that Tatsuya Nagamine passed away this summer, partly explaining his notable absence from major projects such as Dragon Ball Daima or the latest arc of One Piece.
The information was shared by two artists, Kōhei Tanaka (musician of One Piece ) and screenwriter Osamu Suzuki, on social media on the afternoon of November 13, after an internal memorial service at Toei Animation.

Musician Kohei Tanaka , who composed the music for One Piece Film: Z , a work directed by Nagamine , emotionally recounted: “I attended the memorial service this morning. For One Piece , he was a true pillar.
Meetings with him were fun… his rapid-fire voice, like a machine gun, I wish I could hear it again.”

Screenwriter Osamu Suzuki, who penned One Piece Film: Z , recalls their first collaboration in 2010. His first draft was rejected immediately, and the final story was based on an idea proposed by Nagamine himself.
Suzuki recalled: “When I finished the script, the director came into the meeting room, bowed deeply and said, ‘Thank you for your hard work.’ I almost cried. He rarely smiled and looked serious, but he worked with all his soul.”
Suzuki said Nagamine was a perfectionist, willing to "wear down" his health to perfect every detail.
He also mentioned the song Kaido - the film's song he wrote at Nagamine's request - as a final tribute to the late director.
With One Piece , he was the main director from episode 892 - the opening of the Wano Kuni war - until episode 1,122 of the first part of Egghead Island before the anime went on hiatus in 2024.

In addition to the main series, he also directed One Piece Film Z - one of the franchise's best-reviewed films - and produced the movie Heart of Gold and several other spin-off projects.
Nagamine was also instrumental in the Dragon Ball revival of the 2010s. He directed Dragon Ball Super: Broly - a global box office phenomenon in 2018 - and helmed episodes 77-131 of the Dragon Ball Super series.
Previously, he served as assistant director on The Path to Power , and worked on Dragon Ball GT and Dragon Ball Z Kai .

Not only limited to two major anime monuments, Nagamine also has extensive experience in Digimon, including Digimon Savers the Movie and Digimon Adventure 02: Hurricane Touchdown, as well as the Precure series - where he served as director for HappinessCharge Precure! and series director of Heartcatch Precure!, in addition to a series of individual films and episodes of this long-standing brand.
He was also on the main production team of unique anime such as Ojamajo Doremi, Saint Seiya Omega and many parts of the Saint Seiya project.
With his contributions, he is considered one of the most important directors shaping the Japanese popular anime style over the past 20 years.
