These days of July, many places around the world are taking place in response to the campaign "July without plastic" to reduce plastic waste.
On a famous tourist island in southern Thailand, Koh Nang Yuan, for many years now, people have maintained the habit of limiting the use of plastic products, especially single-use plastic products, and have similar requirements for any tourists visiting the island to maintain the natural environment on the island and protect the coral reef.
Koh Nang Yuan Island is located in the Pha-Ngan island district of the southern province of Surat Thani. Consisting of three small islands linked by fine white sand beaches and clear waters, the island is a great diving spot for coral reefs.
During the peak tourist season each year, Koh Nang Yuan attracts thousands of visitors every day, most of whom are international visitors who want to dive to see coral and capture the wonderful underwater scenes.
However, visitors to Koh Nang Yuan Island will have to abide by a strict rule that no plastic or styrofoam containers are allowed on the island, which means visitors cannot even bring water bottles onto the island unless the water is in a recyclable bottle.
The ban on single-use plastics on the island is a way for Nangyuan Island Diving Resort, a family-owned business that has been leased the island by the Thai government for over 30 years, to maintain the island's natural environment and protect the coral reefs around the island in the best possible condition.
During their stay on the island, the resorts will provide guests with glass bottled water instead of plastic bottles and provide specific instructions on where to collect empty glass bottles when they are no longer needed. At the same time, visitors are also encouraged to use water sparingly.
Previously, the coral reefs on Koh Nang Yuan Island were severely affected by Typhoon Gay in November 1989 and the El Nino climate phenomenon in the 1990s. The coral reefs recovered over the following years.
Thanks to the dedication of the islanders and local businesses, especially the effectiveness of the regulation banning single-use plastic items on the island, waste treatment on the island has been greatly reduced, while contributing to helping the shallow and deep-water coral reefs on this island have a clean marine environment to restore their original beauty.
