Dull pain in the abdomen, examination revealed a tumor in the stomach

Often suffering from dull pain in the upper abdomen, but thinking it was due to an unsuitable diet, Mrs. CY (58 years old, from Cambodia) silently endured for over a month. When the pain became more and more obvious, she decided to go to Ho Chi Minh City for examination and was unexpectedly diagnosed with a tumor in her stomach.

Through the results of paraclinical examination at Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, doctors discovered a tumor in the stomach measuring about 4x5 cm located on the lesser curvature of the stomach, in front of the body of the stomach - suspected gastrointestinal stromal tumor, also known as GIST tumor.

Fortunately, the tumor had not invaded surrounding organs, but if left for a long time, it could lead to gastrointestinal bleeding, stomach perforation or metastasis. Faced with that risk, the doctors decided to perform surgery early.

On July 7, Master - Specialist Doctor 2 Nguyen Trung Duong, Deputy Head of the Department of General Surgery, Nam Sai Gon International General Hospital, said that GIST tumors often do not cause obvious symptoms in the early stages, so they are easily missed. However, if treatment is delayed, the tumor can grow large, causing serious complications. The case of patient Y. was discovered at the right time, a golden opportunity for radical intervention without affecting the structure and function of the digestive system.

Surgery for atypical gastric tumors

After a comprehensive assessment, Dr. Duong indicated atypical gastric tumor resection surgery, which is the optimal method to completely remove the tumor while preserving the stomach structure. During the surgery, the team used a stapler to cut and suture at the same time, helping to shorten the surgery time and minimize damage to surrounding healthy tissue. The tumor was removed, then the cut area was reinforced with absorbable sutures to ensure tightness and reduce the risk of postoperative leakage.

The entire surgery went smoothly in just 30 minutes. The tumor was completely removed, the incision was clean, there was little bleeding and the surrounding healthy tissue was retained as much as possible.

After the surgery, the patient recovered well, was able to eat, sleep and had almost no difficulty in daily activities. During the post-operative follow-up, the patient's health indicators were stable. When the doctor did a general check-up and saw that all signs were progressing favorably, the patient was discharged after 3 days and scheduled for a follow-up visit.

Take the initiative to see a doctor when there are unusual signs.

According to Dr. Duong, GIST is a rare type of digestive tumor but can progress silently over a long period of time. Symptoms are often unclear and can be easily confused with common digestive disorders such as dull abdominal pain, bloating, feeling full quickly, or prolonged fatigue.

"Being subjective and hesitating to go to the doctor can cause the tumor to grow larger, causing dangerous complications. When abnormal symptoms appear in the abdomen, patients should go for an early check-up to be diagnosed and treated promptly," Dr. Duong advised.
