AI application in endoscopy diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases

“Gastro-colon cancer is the fifth most common cancer in Vietnam and early detection and removal of polyps by endoscopy helps reduce the incidence and mortality of gastric and colon cancer. In particular, the application of AI-assisted gastrointestinal endoscopy will help increase the rate of early cancer and polyp detection and support polyp classification for treatment planning.”

That is the information given by Dr. Ho Dang Quy Dung, Chairman of the Vietnam Digestive Endoscopy Association; Head of the Gastroenterology Department, Cho Ray Hospital, at the scientific conference "Remarkable advances in endoscopic diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases" recently organized by Hoan My Saigon Hospital.

Dr. Ho Dang Quy Dung said that the early signs of stomach and colon cancer are often silent, the symptoms are similar to common digestive diseases, making patients often subjective and ignore them, most of them go to the hospital when the cancer has progressed to a late stage. Active screening is a method to help detect early signs from the pre-cancerous stage. This plays an important role in developing a treatment plan from an early stage, helping to save costs while increasing treatment effectiveness, preventing progression to cancer.

Applying AI in digestive endoscopy will help diagnose H.pylori (HP bacteria); detect esophageal - stomach cancer; colon polyps and classify polyps... from there, doctors will know the level of cancer invasion...

According to a 6-month study (from February 1, 2024 to July 31, 2024, 5,309 colonoscopy patients were included in the study), including 2,612 standard colonoscopy patients and 2,697 AI-assisted gastrointestinal endoscopy patients. The results in the AI-assisted group will give polyp warnings, but the decision will be entirely up to the doctor performing the procedure.

“AI plays a good role in supporting the detection and classification of polyps in colonoscopy, helping to significantly improve the detection rate of polyps and adenomas, especially small polyps, and providing good accuracy in classifying lesions,” informed Dr. Ho Dang Quy Dung.

According to Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Bao Long, Director of Hoan My Saigon Hospital, the workshop "Remarkable advances in endoscopy and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases" had the participation of a team of doctors, medical staff and leading experts in the same field; sharing advances, updating actual results in endoscopy diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal diseases by leading expert doctors...
