The weather in Hanoi and the northern provinces has just experienced an unseasonably humid period in early November. With high humidity, the phenomenon of items being frequently damp and clothes taking a long time to dry has become a nightmare.
To cope with this situation, many people have the need to consult and buy dehumidifiers, making the market more vibrant than usual.
“This is an unforeseen change because the wet season appears earlier than usual. Normally, the wet season peaks at the end of December or January-February every year,” said Nguyen Minh Tan, Director of a large electronics retail system.
The reason why dehumidifiers suddenly become popular
According to Mr. Tan, sales of dehumidifiers and household dryers in the first days of November increased tenfold compared to normal. Sales were highest last weekend, especially when the humidity level in many northern provinces/cities fluctuated very high (90-98%).
“This shows the very quick and urgent response of consumers to unusual weather developments,” Mr. Tan added.
Not only consumers, distribution systems are also surprised by the phenomenon of early humidity.
Ms. Nguyen Ha, Marketing Director of a large distribution unit, said that companies usually import goods and prepare for the next sales season in September every year. However, this year, the stock of goods was consumed faster than expected.
“In fact, many models are 'sold out', forcing us to import more products much earlier than planned,” Ms. Ha emphasized.
The above situation makes many people wonder whether it is too late to buy a dehumidifier now. In fact, the representative of the distribution unit admitted that many dealer systems were also surprised by the weather developments and had not yet imported goods from the supplier, but had solutions to adjust.
“We have worked closely with logistics partners and companies to increase the frequency of imports and flexibly coordinate goods between warehouses to ensure that the supply is soon stabilized and in time to serve the urgent needs of users,” Ms. Ha added.

Nowadays, many people do not wait until the wet season to buy a dehumidifier. According to Mr. Hoang Anh Dung, Product Director of a home appliance brand, users increasingly understand the importance of dehumidifiers in protecting health, interior design and indoor air quality.
“Even on days when the weather is not too humid, the number of machines sold is still quite good instead of only focusing on the peak humid season like before,” Mr. Dung affirmed.
According to documents from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the ideal relative humidity (RH) in the home should range from 30-50%. Too much humidity can create the perfect environment for mold and bacteria to grow, causing respiratory diseases and allergies, and damaging electronic equipment and expensive wooden furniture.
What to note when buying a dehumidifier?
On the market, dehumidifiers are divided into many different types, based on the capacity of water extraction in a day. According to Consumer Reports magazine, users need to determine the relative humidity in the room, then calculate the area of the room to choose the appropriate capacity.
Humidity also tends to fluctuate with temperature. In warm weather, the ideal relative humidity is usually 40-60%. In colder weather, humidity usually falls between 30-50%.
Popular dehumidifier models have a capacity of less than 20 L (capable of absorbing 20 liters of water/day), suitable for most rooms under 35 m2, while large models have a capacity of 50-60 L.
Users can refer to the manufacturer's website to choose a model that is suitable for the size and humidity of the room, and should choose a machine with a slightly higher capacity. If the capacity is too low, the air dehumidification efficiency may not be as expected.
In fact, customers tend to choose dehumidifiers with high capacity. According to Mr. Hoang Anh Dung, many families buy dehumidifiers for use in the whole house instead of just placing them in a single room.

The criteria when buying a dehumidifier revolve around capacity, noise level, water tank capacity... Photo: New York Times . |
If placed in a bedroom, noise level is also a factor to consider. The device is usually quite quiet, but continuous operation can be distracting, especially when sleeping.
According to Consumer Reports , noisy dehumidifiers typically reach 70 dB, equivalent to the sound of a shower, while quiet models are around 50 dB, equivalent to the sound of a refrigerator. Therefore, users should consult the manufacturer's specifications and consider the location of the dehumidifier so as not to be disturbed while it is operating.
Next, you should pay attention to the arrangement of the drain pipe to reduce the frequency of water pouring during the day, choose models with large tank capacity so you don't have to pour water continuously.
In addition to the dehumidifying feature, users today also require many other features to optimize costs. According to Mr. Hoang Anh Dung, this year there are dehumidifiers with advanced air filtering features, using HEPA filters like specialized air purifiers. This helps to solve both humidity and air quality, two major problems of the humid season.
“I think the trend of the upcoming wet season will focus on multi-functional devices that operate smoothly, dehumidify effectively and filter air well, meeting the need to find comprehensive solutions to balance the air and improve the quality of life,” Mr. Dung emphasized.
