Tamanu oil soon completed production process, commercialized

Delegates participated in the acceptance of the project on equipment for the production of tamanu cream and tamanu oil.

Positive results

The project was signed under a contract between the Provincial Department of Science and Technology and Dong Thap Muoi Medicinal Materials Conservation and Development Research Joint Stock Company (Binh Phong Thanh town, Moc Hoa district), with an implementation period of 24 months (from August 2021 to July 2023). The total implementation cost is 4.292 billion VND, of which the support budget from the science budget is 1.23 billion VND, and the counterpart capital from the enterprise is 3.062 billion VND. With this task, the research company completed 2 processes corresponding to 2 specialized equipment lines to create a product of tamanu oil combined with cajuput essential oil and tamanu cream that meets cosmetic standards.

Director of the Department of Science and Technology - Nguyen Minh Hai said: This scientific research project aims to create products of economic value, serving the need to support the treatment of skin diseases originating from the tamanu tree. The requirement of the project is to research and perfect the technology of extracting essential tamanu oil, perfecting the technology of preparing tamanu cream products and tamanu oil combined with cajuput oil. Thereby, analyzing and evaluating the antibacterial ability, wound healing and acute toxicity of products from tamanu tree and tamanu oil combined with cajuput oil; at the same time, building a document guiding the operation of the production line and a set of basic standards for the products formed.

According to the Director of Dong Thap Muoi Medicinal Materials Research, Conservation and Development Joint Stock Company - pharmacist Bui Dac Thang, tamanu oil has been used for a long time in the treatment of skin diseases, helps heal wounds and is used in the treatment of burns; tea tree and cajuput essential oils have been proven to have antibacterial activity. During the research and testing process, the Company combined tea tree and cajuput essential oils with tamanu oil in the tamanu cream product, helping to heal wounds quickly and increase antibacterial ability.

The objective of the research is to investigate the ratio of tea tree oil and cajuput oil with tamanu oil to have the best antibacterial activity. Then, optimize the excipients used for preparation by surface response method to form the formula for tamanu cream. The host unit also researched the technological process and equipment to produce tamanu cream products according to the researched formula. The research results showed that the combination of 28% tamanu oil, 1% tea tree oil and 9% cajuput oil gave good antibacterial activity. The research results of the technological process have formed a combination of equipment and machines that can meet the criteria set forth in the formula, creating a cosmetic product, which is granted a publication by the Department of Health of Long An province. Both products have been tested on samples and have given the desired results.

Based on the research and testing results, the Company developed a document guiding the production process of the first batch, trial production of 2,000 tamanu cream products, 1,000 tamanu essential oil products combined with cajeput oil.

Perfecting production technology

Calophyllum cream and Calophyllum oil products have the effect of healing scars.

At the scientific topic acceptance session, Associate Professor, Dr. Bui My Linh - lecturer of the Faculty of Traditional Medicine, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, a member of the topic's review committee, said that the topic idea was good, the product made served the needs of people's lives. This topic was previously researched and implemented by the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, and in the world, tamanu essential oil or tamanu cream is still used as medicine. The advantage of this topic is that it was implemented in the Southwest region - where there is an abundant source of raw materials, high essentiality and combined with cajuput essential oil. The company needs to consider a feasible plan for mixing additional flavors into the product; at the same time, coordinate training for students because the company is located far from medical and pharmaceutical training facilities.

Director of the Department of Science and Technology - Nguyen Minh Hai highly appreciated the scientific research topic and requested the Company to continue to perfect the product production process in the best way. The Company also needs to evaluate the limitations of the product to propose further research directions to perfect or commercialize the product. These two products will be the basis for the Company to improve its production capacity, serving the needs of consumers for products of natural origin as medicinal herbs. The Company needs to focus on planting candlenut trees on the land area in the conservation area under management to proactively source raw materials. From there, contribute to the socio-economic development of the province, create a spillover effect to neighboring areas, and create jobs for the Dong Thap Muoi area./.
