Teaching children to love the sea and islands from simple things

In the midst of regular school activities, bright red flags with the map of Vietnam and the two archipelagos of Hoang Sa and Truong Sa appear more and more in classrooms and union rooms. In Don Duong, organizing propaganda activities on sovereignty over seas, islands and borders has become a familiar part of the lives of young people, simple and practical but enough to arouse pride and responsibility in the young generation.

Recently, the Campaign “Proud of a strip of country” has been widely deployed by the Don Duong District Youth Union to all Youth Union and Pioneer organizations in the district. Through that, more than 100 maps fully showing Vietnam’s territorial sovereignty have been hung in headquarters, classrooms, and Youth Union rooms. Although the work is small, it has long-term significance, as the learning and living space of young people gradually becomes a place to mark the symbol of love for the homeland and country.

Not only visual images, propaganda activities are also organized systematically and in depth. In the thematic activities, students and union members are given an overview of the role and strategic position of the sea, islands and borders in economic development and national defense. Information on international law, Vietnamese legal documents, and the viewpoints and policies of the Party and State in resolving issues in the East Sea are also conveyed in a selective and easy-to-understand manner.

It is worth noting that the approach is adapted to each age group. For primary school students, the propaganda content is concretized through images, maps, and interactive activities. They are encouraged to discuss, ask questions, draw pictures, and tell stories; thereby receiving knowledge in a gentle yet profound way. Le Huynh Gia My - a 5C student at Thanh My Primary School shared: "What I like most is when I look at the map and listen to the teacher talk about the East Sea. I understand that the sea is not just for swimming or playing, but is a place where soldiers are protecting day and night. I feel very proud and grateful."

Not only at primary level, propaganda sessions are also regularly deployed to union cadres, union members, and youth in communes and towns. The content is expanded to include strategies for developing marine economy in association with environmental protection, legal evidence affirming Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos, as well as results in border and sea protection activities in recent times.

Propaganda not only takes place directly but also expands on cyberspace. Many youth union bases mobilize union members to change their profile pictures and personal device wallpapers to the map of Vietnam. Along with that, many specific tasks have also been carried out right at the base, such as: giving maps to village youth union branches, organizing painting contests on the theme of sea and islands, painting propaganda murals on rural roads, hanging propaganda billboards in residential areas, etc.

At the same time, the District Youth Union also sent cadres to participate in provincial-level activities such as: "Youth journey for the homeland's sea and islands", contributing to youth projects towards borders and islands. In addition, at schools, many units also combine propaganda on sea and island sovereignty with annual emulation activities such as storytelling, book reading, and writing. This approach not only increases the effectiveness of outreach but also helps students form historical thinking and civic awareness from an early age.

Thanks to appropriate methods and consistent activities, the propaganda work on sea and island sovereignty in Don Duong district is gradually going into depth. Images and data that seem dry are gradually becoming familiar through each activity, story, and drawing of students. According to Mr. Nguyen Bao Kien - Secretary of the Don Duong District Youth Union: “Propaganda about sovereignty over seas, islands and borders cannot be spread out or theoretical. We try to choose the appropriate way of conveying information to each age group. For children, it is map images, interactive activities; for young people, it is guided by real data. The important thing is to create a bond, so that each child is aware of his or her own responsibility. From the map hanging in the classroom, from the story about the soldier on the remote island, love for the homeland is naturally planted in the children's awareness. That is an important foundation so that when they grow up, they will not only remember the shape of the country, but also know how to cherish and preserve that sacred sovereignty with all responsibility and pride".
