Speaking to the Government Electronic Newspaper on May 8, Mr. Tran Minh Tuan, Director of the Center for Irrigation and Water Supply Research (Southern Institute of Water Resources Research) said that the forecast of water resources for the Mekong Delta in the dry season of 2024 and 2025 belongs to the group of years with a frequency of occurrence of about 60-75%, with saline intrusion at a higher than average level.
In fact, the water discharge from hydropower plants in the basin in general from March 2025 to present has increased the flow downstream and reduced the stress of saline intrusion. Saline intrusion is within the protection range of irrigation systems, water storage will ensure water sources for production in sufficient areas according to the annual plans of localities.
Meanwhile, the 2025 Summer-Autumn crop planting area has reached more than 887,000 hectares, about 60% of the planned area, mainly concentrated in sweet regions.
To ensure production safety, the Southern Institute of Water Resources recommends that the upper Mekong Delta region (including An Giang, Dong Thap, upstream Long An, Kien Giang, Can Tho) needs to implement measures to store water and water-saving irrigation.
The central region of the Mekong Delta (including Tien Giang, Hau Giang, Vinh Long, Bac Lieu, Soc Trang, Tra Vinh, Ben Tre, part of Long An, Can Tho, Kien Giang) needs to operate salinity control works properly and store water whenever possible. When taking fresh water or irrigating crops, it is necessary to closely check salinity, especially for fruit trees.
In the coastal areas of the Mekong Delta (including parts of Long An, Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu, Ca Mau and Kien Giang), unusual saline intrusion may affect water resources and production in coastal irrigation systems, such as Go Cong, North Ben Tre, and the coastal area of Tra Vinh.
Therefore, it is necessary to prepare response plans, store and use water reasonably, especially ensuring water for fruit growing areas in Chau Thanh, Cho Lach, Mo Cay Bac, Mo Cay Nam districts of Ben Tre province, and Ke Sach district of Soc Trang province.
It is forecasted that next week, salinity will tend to increase slightly until the end of the week, the deepest salinity line of 4g/l in the Mekong River mouths is about 30-35 km. Therefore, it is necessary to operate salinity control works properly, take advantage of water to serve Summer-Autumn production and closely monitor water quality before taking.
Meanwhile, from May 1-7, 2025, the Mekong Delta region will experience unseasonal rains of 20-50 mm, with some places experiencing more than 100 mm. It is forecasted that next week there will continue to be widespread rains with rainfall of 30-50 mm in many places in the region.
