Fang Gang was born in 1947 into a wealthy business family in Hong Kong. From a young age, he showed his talent for acting but was prevented from pursuing art by his family. The actor worked in the garment, advertising, cosmetics, and magazine industries. Until the mid-1980s, he had the opportunity to participate in a play and achieved great success. Thanks to that opportunity, Fang Gang caught the eye of director Johnnie To and had the opportunity to participate in the film Bloody Road, opening a new chapter for his acting career.
At his peak, Phuong Cuong left a strong impression on the Hong Kong screen when he took on a series of impressive villain roles, being dubbed the "number one villain" of the fragrant harbor film industry. The most prominent of these was the villain role in the TVB series Nhan tai bien duyen ( People at the border ) co-starring with actors Le Minh, Lau Ching Wan, Lam Van Long, released in 1990.
According to HK01 , the actor's cold eyes with a soulless gaze, perverted and hysterical actions turned his character into an image that haunted and resented the audience for many years, associated with the male artist's name. The news site revealed that when the film was re-aired, online discussions about Phuong Cuong's performance were even more popular than the male lead Le Minh.

Thanks to his explosive role, Phuong Cuong was recruited by ATV with a "huge" salary. Later, he continued to reap success with a series of blockbusters: Hao Mon, Ngan Ho Ve Dem, Vua Phim Truong, Nhat Do Nhi Den...
Many viewers commented that Phuong Cuong did not act in many films, but each of his roles was unique, vivid, had its own color, and left a strong impression on the audience. His villainous roles conquered the audience with his sharp eyes, cunning personality, clever schemes, and aura that exuded true cruelty. This artist once shared that he never tried to play a villain, but only focused on building the character's behavior to match the logical thinking of a true villain and completely immersed himself in the role with real emotions.

By the mid-1990s, Fang Gang withdrew from the Hong Kong entertainment industry and moved to the mainland to pursue his own career. In the next 10 years, he only appeared in a few film projects in the mainland and then retired.
Regarding the reason for disappearing when his career was at its peak, Phuong Cuong once explained: "After many years working in the film and television industry, I felt almost exhausted, so I chose to quietly leave, choosing not to work and spending time traveling abroad for a few years." In his old age, he lives a leisurely life in a large villa in mainland China, raising pets, occasionally sharing daily photos on social media but not mentioning his family.
It is reported that Phuong Cuong lives alone, has no biological children, only adopted children. He shared that he does not feel bored because he is alone. "I have a large circle of friends, from young to old, male and female, and I hardly have any free time. Of course, sometimes I feel lonely, but I often use that time to reflect on my life," the artist once expressed.
