What topic will be included in the 2024 high school graduation exam for Literature?

According to the plan of the Ministry of Education and Training, at 7:30 AM this morning (June 27th), more than 1 million candidates nationwide will receive their exam papers, and at 7:35 AM they will officially begin taking the Literature exam for the 2024 high school graduation exam. The Literature exam is in essay format, and candidates have 120 minutes to complete it.

This is the only subject in essay format, so parents and students are eagerly awaiting to know which essay topics will be included in the 2024 high school graduation exam in Literature.

According to teachers, this year's Literature exam, particularly the social commentary section, may focus on core human values ​​such as compassion, attitude towards life, responsibility, character, aspirations, and dreams. In addition, the frequently discussed issues of the digital age, the 4.0 era, and human behavior are also likely to be addressed. For literary analysis, candidates could explore poems such as "Tay Tien," "Dat Nuoc," "Viet Bac," and "Song." For prose, they could focus on works like "Vo Chong A Phu" and "Nguoi Lai Do Song Da." Candidates need to possess a solid, systematic understanding of the subject matter and strong essay writing skills. Only then, even with variations in the exam questions, will they be able to seize the opportunity.

Previously, the Ministry of Education and Training released sample questions for the 2024 high school graduation exam in Literature to help candidates familiarize themselves with and visualize the exam format, and to serve as a resource for teachers and students to organize effective review sessions.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training, 2024 is the final year of teaching and testing under the 2006 General Education Program. Therefore, the 2024 high school graduation exam will basically maintain the same structure as the 2023 high school graduation exam. However, to prepare for a new phase, the exam will include a reasonable increase in content related to practical application, gradually approaching the competency-based assessment approach, in line with the goals and requirements for developing students' competencies and qualities as outlined in the 2018 General Education Program.

Specifically, in terms of structure, format, and difficulty level, the exam remains fundamentally stable with four levels of cognitive ability: recognition, comprehension, application, and advanced application; consistent with the objectives of the High School Graduation Examination.

Regarding the question format, the Literature exam is essay-based, and the questions are designed to encourage students to be creative and to limit the use of model essays.

In terms of content, the exam questions are scientifically sound and accurate, adhering to the knowledge and skills standards of the 2006 General Education Program; they have a higher degree of differentiation, especially in questions at the application and higher application levels. Furthermore, the exam includes questions aimed at solving real-life and social problems, constructed in a way that closely aligns with the assessment of student competencies, thus ensuring a fair and accurate evaluation of candidates' abilities.

According to the Ministry of Education and Training's report on the afternoon of June 26th, this year there are a total of 1,071,393 registered candidates. Of these, 1,060,356 candidates showed up to complete the registration procedures, achieving a rate of 98.96%; the total number of candidates who did not show up to complete the registration procedures is 11,037, accounting for 1.04%.

Overall, the exam registration process was safe, orderly, serious, and in accordance with regulations. Some candidates who did not arrive to register will complete the registration at the beginning of the Literature exam.

Prior to the exam, information about a "leaked 2024 high school graduation exam" was shared and spread in several online groups and forums, causing a public uproar. After receiving reports about this incident, the Ministry of Education and Training contacted and requested the Ministry of Public Security to assist in verifying the individuals who posted the false information. Currently, the Ministry of Public Security is conducting an investigation to handle the matter according to the law.

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong, Head of the National Steering Committee for the 2024 High School Graduation Examination, said: "We all know that in the context of today's technological development, it is inevitable that more and more sophisticated devices will appear - not only for cheating in exams but also for many other activities. Our challenge is to do a good job of prevention and control."

To detect and prevent cheating devices during exams, the Ministry of Education and Training has coordinated with functional units of the Ministry of Public Security to train all exam officials. Subsequently, the police in provinces/cities continue to train teachers and staff involved in exam administration in their respective localities on identifying high-tech devices and the risks that candidates may use.

We prioritize prevention, identification, and deterrence. In this regard, we continue to emphasize the importance of human resources. Even with the widespread availability of high-tech devices used for cheating, the most crucial aspect remains the selection of skilled personnel. Simultaneously, we must improve communication to ensure candidates understand the seriousness of being caught cheating and the strict penalties for deliberate violations.

The Ministry of Public Security and the police forces of 63 provinces/cities are closely coordinating with the education sector to effectively prevent cheating using high-tech devices in this year's high school graduation exam."

The 2024 high school graduation exam will take place from June 27th to 29th. On the morning of June 27th, candidates will take the essay-based Literature exam, followed by the Mathematics exam in the afternoon. On the morning of June 28th, they will take the Natural Sciences or Social Sciences combined exam, and in the afternoon, the English exam.
