On the afternoon of May 3, records at the scene showed that traffic across Gianh Bridge on National Highway 1 (connecting Bo Trach district with Ba Don town, Quang Binh province) was congested for more than 500m in the South - North direction.

Private vehicles from Phong Nha - Ke Bang direction poured into the Gianh Bridge South intersection to join Highway 1 moving north. |
At around 3:50 p.m., the flow of vehicles from the South to the North and the Phong Nha - Ke Bang tourist routes, entertainment venues, and recreation areas pouring into the Gianh Bridge South intersection to join Highway 1 moving to the North was too large, causing traffic through this area to be overloaded.
Although the Quang Binh Traffic Police have mobilized officers to coordinate with local police to regulate traffic, at the Gianh bridge bottleneck, the flow of vehicles moves slowly, with some times causing local congestion.

The authorities are straining to regulate traffic. |
The old Gianh Bridge is now a vital traffic point, but the narrow bridge has only 2 lanes and has deteriorated after many years of use. During holidays, especially the April 30-May 1 holiday, the increased pressure causes National Highway 1 to often become congested here.
To solve the above situation, Gianh bridge is being upgraded and repaired. The project starts at Km624+799 (Ba Don town) and ends at Km626+901 (Ha My commune, Bo Trach district), with a length of nearly 750m.
After the festival, the traffic volume from the South to the North was so large that the Gianh Bridge intersection (Quang Binh) was sometimes overloaded. |
After being upgraded and repaired, the bridge was upgraded to 2 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 lanes for non-motor vehicles, 12m wide. The approach roads at both ends of the bridge are 20.5m wide, meeting high traffic volume.
It is expected that when completed, Gianh Bridge will increase traffic capacity, connect traffic, and promote socio-economic development in the Northern Quang Binh region.
While waiting for Gianh Bridge to be upgraded and repaired, PC08 Department of Quang Binh Police recommends that people take the initiative to plan their routes to avoid prolonged congestion on National Highway 1 at the Gianh Bridge intersection from today until noon tomorrow, May 4.
