The image of a 23-year-old brother taking on all the responsibilities, taking care of his two younger siblings in place of his parents, and the story of a mother and her three children living under the temple's roof for more than 10 years are two slices of life that appear in episode 134 of Vietnamese Family Home, once again bringing tears to viewers' eyes.
Episode 134 of the program Vietnamese Family Home hosted by MC Thanh Thao, actor Quang Trung and beauty queen Nguyen Ngoc Kieu Duy appeared as guests. Quang Trung said he often watches the program, the heartbreaking images of the characters always move him.
“When watching Vietnamese Family Home, I only have one wish that the program will grow stronger and stronger, produce more episodes, and be able to broadcast up to more than 1,000 episodes to help more families. I also have more opportunities to share with families, contributing to bringing joy to children,” Quang Trung said.
Similar to Quang Trung, Miss Kieu Duy said that she could not hide her emotions every time she watched the show. The beauty queen believes that through the show, people can listen more, not only help those in difficult situations but also look back at how far they have come and how much they have loved those around them. "Kieu Duy feels that with the opportunity to come to this show, she will also learn how to love herself as well as love others more" , Miss Vietnam 2024 shared.
Participating in the program, actor Quang Trung and beauty queen Kieu Duy could not help but feel sorry when witnessing the difficult circumstances of the characters. Among them, the image of the three brothers Ngo Ngoc Bao Chau living together and the image of the three mother and children Le Thi Kieu Mi living together in a temple made many people feel sorry.
23-year-old brother shouldered the burden of raising 2 orphaned siblings after their parents passed away
Ngo Ngoc Bao Chau (2011), is in 8th grade at Thanh My Loi Secondary School, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City. Bao Chau's family has 5 siblings, growing up in the love of both parents, extremely happy. Ironically, in December 2023, her parents were in a traffic accident while on their way to deliver goods. Her father was seriously injured and hospitalized, and had type 2 diabetes affecting his organs, so he passed away in January 2024. Although her mother was lucky to survive, because she worked hard to raise her children alone, and had a heart valve disease, she passed away just two months later.
The continuous departure of her parents caused Bao Chau's family to collapse, the 5 siblings almost lost their way. Not long after, the second brother and fourth sister also moved out to live separately, rarely contacting each other. The house with 7 members, although not rich but filled with laughter, suddenly became quiet, only Bao Chau and her third brother Ngo Quoc Bao (2002) and youngest brother Ngo Ngoc Long (2015) lived together and depended on each other.
Because of his family's financial difficulties, Quoc Bao dropped out of school in the 8th grade. After his parents passed away, his second brother and fourth sister moved out, and Quoc Bao became the main breadwinner, working alone to take care of his two younger siblings. Currently, Bao works at a convenience store with an income of 5 million VND/month. In addition, he also works as a ride-hailing driver, earning about 200,000 VND/day. Quoc Bao works continuously, sometimes he only has time to sleep for 3-4 hours. Quoc Bao said that although he is very tired, he has to try hard to earn money to take care of his two younger siblings.
When his mother passed away, the family borrowed money to pay for the funeral, and still has 4 million VND to pay. The three brothers are currently living in a small rented room of only 9 square meters in Thu Duc City, with a monthly rent of 3 million VND. Quoc Bao's income is just enough to cover living expenses and send his younger siblings to school, so it's basically not enough. He also has to save every little bit for the future. Bao dreams of having money to open a water cart to earn more income, and also to take care of his two younger siblings.
“What I want now is to provide my two siblings with a full education. I myself did not study fully, so I understand the difficulties of having to run around looking for a job. I feel that if I do not study fully, I do not have many choices in life,” Quoc Bao said.
The youngest is Ngo Ngoc Long (2015), in 4th grade, very obedient and polite. When the third brother goes to work, Chau and Long stay at home and take care of each other, cook and clean the house so that the brother doesn't have to worry. Bao Chau really wants to grow up quickly to help her brother. She is very proud of her third brother, loves and appreciates him because he always tries his best to let her go to school every day.
Talking about her parents, Bao Chau burst into tears, regretting that she did not have a complete family photo. She said that the photo with the most family members was when her siblings took a photo with her mother at her father's funeral. This made MC Thanh Thao feel sad. Thanh Thao was moved by the image of Quoc Bao, her 23-year-old brother who had to take care of everything, shouldering the responsibility of being both a father and a mother, but never gave up.
Knowing that Quoc Bao wanted to start a small business, selling drinks to have a more stable income, and also to take care of his younger siblings, MC Thanh Thao decided to support him in part. She said she would give him a set of 3 juicers, a blender, etc. if Quoc Bao opened a drink shop. And if he opened a grocery store, she would support the first order with a value of 5 million VND. The female MC wanted to accompany her strong-willed brother's small dream.
Miss Kieu Duy gave Bao Chau an old drawing kit to satisfy her passion for art. The beauty queen hopes that Bao Chau can draw what she likes and be happier and more positive in life. She also encouraged Bao Chau and her three siblings, hoping that they and their younger brother Ngoc Long will try to study hard to not disappoint Quoc Bao's sacrifice.
Unlike the energetic and individualistic image in other programs, Quang Trung in Vietnamese Family Home is very gentle and close like an older brother to the children. The actor kindly asked about the children and learned about the dreams of all three brothers. From Bao Chau's dream of becoming a painter, Ngoc Long's dream of becoming a singer to Quoc Bao's desire to open a coffee shop, all were supported by the actor. Seeing the children shy when talking about their dreams, Quang Trung gently encouraged and gave many words of encouragement to help them become more confident.
The mother raised two children after her husband died, taking refuge under the temple's roof for many years.
Another heartbreaking situation in this week's episode is the family of Le Thi Kieu Mi (2012), a 7th grade student at An Duong Vuong Secondary School, Ninh Hai District, Ninh Thuan Province. Kieu Mi lives with her mother and brother. Kieu Mi's father passed away from liver cancer at the end of 2024. When he was alive, his father worked as a porter, which was the main source of income for the family.
Since her husband passed away, Ms. Tran Thi Anh Xuan (1981) - Kieu Mi's mother - has become the sole breadwinner, raising her two children alone. Ms. Xuan works as a garlic and onion seller with an unstable income of about 100,000 VND/day. She sells from early morning until noon, then comes home to cook for her children. Ms. Xuan's cycle of earning a living repeats itself, causing her health to decline more and more seriously. She currently has gallstones and diabetes, so she has to regularly check and receive treatment.
The family has no stable home so they have been staying at a temple for over 10 years. Currently, the mother and her three children live there and take care of and clean the temple, only paying for electricity and water every month. The small house is so simple that it doesn't even have a door to protect it from the rain or sun. Every time it rains, the wind blows water into the sleeping area, wetting it, forcing the mother and her three children to stay up all night.
Kieu Mi's older brother is Le Dinh Loc (2007), a 12th grader at Ton Duc Thang High School. In addition to school hours, Loc works part-time at a restaurant in the evening to earn extra income to buy books and tuition, helping his mother somewhat. Loc has been independent since he was young, every summer he finds a job to help his mother. Kieu Mi is also very obedient and hard-working, she often helps her mother clean the house and massages her arms and legs to relieve her pain.
Miss Kieu Duy burst into tears when she saw Kieu Mi's family situation. She hugged Kieu Mi and gave her many words of encouragement and comfort when she saw her crying. She said that Kieu Mi was much more mature than her age, always understanding and loving her mother. Moreover, her family's longing for a solid home, not having to rely on the temple, was what moved Kieu Duy the most.
MC Thanh Thao was also moved, expressing her sorrow for Kieu Mi's late "I love you, Dad" words. The female MC was also worried about Ms. Xuan's health as she was still single-handedly supporting the family, despite her health condition, she still made constant efforts. To Thanh Thao, the image of a mother willing to sacrifice everything for her children is always a beautiful, sacred image in families.
