Federico Chiesa is unlikely to receive a Premier League winners' medal. |
Liverpool officially won the English football championship thanks to a 5-1 victory over Tottenham on April 27. However, although Liverpool players, coaching staff and fans celebrated wildly at Anfield, the trophy ceremony did not take place immediately after the final whistle.
Traditionally in England, teams only receive the Premier League trophy at their final home game of the season. On May 25, Liverpool will host Crystal Palace in their final game of the season. This is when they will lift the trophy. Members of the first team will also receive medals.
Under Premier League rules, the champions are awarded 40 commemorative medals. These are awarded by the club to managers, players and officials as they see fit, provided the players receiving the medals have played in at least five Premier League games.
There are currently 21 Liverpool players who have played five or more Premier League games this season and are guaranteed a medal. Chiesa, meanwhile, has only appeared in four Premier League games, putting him at risk of not receiving a champions' medal.
However, with upcoming games against Chelsea, Arsenal, Brighton and Crystal Palace, the Italian is likely to be given the chance to qualify for a medal. Another Liverpool player who has yet to make five Premier League appearances this season is third-choice goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros.
Jaros made his Liverpool debut in a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace in October, replacing the injured Alisson Becker in the second half. To qualify for a champions' medal, he needs to feature in the remaining four games of the season.
