Pioneering the choice of circular economy

On September 21, Investor Magazine launched the book “Circular Economy and Pioneering Models” and held a discussion on further solutions to promote circular economy in Vietnam.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Editor-in-Chief of Investor Magazine - Editor of the book emphasized that developing a green economy and an environmentally friendly circular economy is a major policy of our Party and State in the period of industrialization and modernization of the country. The 10-year socio-economic development strategy 2021 - 2030 clearly stated "Encouraging the development of a circular economic model to comprehensively and effectively use the output of the production process".

The book "Circular Economy and Pioneering Models" published by the Journal is a continuing initiative and effort to disseminate knowledge, recommend policies and create social consensus, contributing to promoting the development of green economy and circular economy in our country.

As one of the pioneering enterprises in the transition to a circular economy, in the book, the representative of Tan Hiep Phat Group, Mr. David Riddle - CEO contributed 2 chapters talking about the benefits of a circular economy for businesses and practical applications at Tan Hiep Phat.

According to Mr. David Riddle, the world is witnessing the depletion of resources. Therefore, the implementation of the circular economic model needs to be carried out on a larger scale, to create change; together turning plastic waste into products, creating a new industry, sustainable development.

In the world, many countries and famous businesses have long applied circular economy. For example, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (China) has created measures to prevent consumers from using excess plastic. For example, the plastic bag tax applies to all plastic shopping bags in the city, which means that excess plastic has value.

“Think of recycled plastic as a new raw material for a very successful industry that will make Vietnam a greener country and could create hundreds of thousands if not millions of new jobs.

There are already many technologies in the world to create and use recycled plastic. The challenge is to have the right infrastructure to do this, on a large scale. And again, that is why cooperation on an unprecedented scale is necessary and urgent" - CEO of Tan Hiep Phat shared.

Defining the circular economy to enter life is a process that can take time and requires a change in thinking across generations, a new approach, and even economic incentives to encourage recycling.

Therefore, "Tan Hiep Phat believes that it is time for businesses to participate in a real way. There needs to be a stronger legal framework that stipulates specific responsibilities for manufacturers and distributors regarding the collection, classification and recycling or payment of disposal costs for discarded products" - Mr. David Riddle suggested.

Over the past 9 years, Tan Hiep Phat has reduced 78,000 tons of plastic waste thanks to the application of circular economy.

The book Circular Economy and Pioneering Models shares useful experiences in transitioning to a circular economy for businesses.

More policies are needed to encourage the development of a circular economy.

Evaluating the book, Mr. Phan Duc Hieu - Standing Member of the National Assembly 's Economic Committee said that the book is a collection of typical cases on circular economy, so the topics are diverse, complete and impressive.

According to him, there is not only research information but also multi-dimensional information, from which readers can both debate and filter out a lot of useful information.

The information is not only useful to readers but also to relevant agencies and ministries in researching and implementing tasks set out in the Prime Minister's Decision on circular economy.

According to Mr. Phan Duc Hieu, it is necessary to review relevant legal regulations. If any regulations are found to not facilitate or hinder the circular economy, they should be abolished immediately.

In addition to introducing new policies to promote the circular economy, it is necessary to review standards and regulations related to the circular economy.

"Product standards that are too detailed and rigid will make it difficult for businesses to change and innovate to adapt to the circular economy. We should review to find regulations that businesses cannot do harmful things and businesses can be autonomous in the rest" - a member of the National Assembly's Economic Committee proposed.

Sharing the same opinion with Mr. David Riddle, Prof. Dr. Nguyen Mai - Chairman of the Foreign Investment Association emphasized that it is necessary to change the model from linear economy to circular economy because resources are being depleted.

Compared to 50 years ago, the world's resource consumption has increased by 150%, the demand for natural resources is 1.7 times the Earth's capacity to meet. In 2014, global plastic waste emissions reached 150 million tons, and by 2050, it is predicted that there will be more than the total number of fish in the oceans;

“By 2030, the demand for resources will increase three times, exceeding human tolerance, so we cannot help but change the growth model. This is an urgent story for humanity, threatening future life and the survival of the earth.

"Large enterprises are doing well, but small and medium enterprises are still facing difficulties and need support," said Professor, Dr. Nguyen Mai.
