Businesses continuously place orders for technical personnel

There is no longer the notion that after graduating from technical school, students "will only become workers". Graduates of this major are being sought after by businesses.

Human resources in the engineering and technology sector are becoming more and more valuable, especially after Ho Chi Minh City merged with Binh Duong and Ba Ria - Vung Tau .

Too much training is still not enough

According to Dr. Le Dinh Kha, Principal of Cao Thang Technical College, large enterprises and foreign enterprises investing in Ho Chi Minh City are increasingly active. For example, Intel Corporation is expanding its production and needs 200 skilled workers, and has "placed an order" with the school this year. It is expected that next year, the labor demand of this corporation will increase even more.

"Each year, the school receives about 10,000 job vacancies, while the number of graduates is only about 3,200. The school is always in a state of not having enough human resources to meet the needs of partner businesses," said Dr. Le Dinh Kha.

Explaining the sharp increase in demand for human resources in the technical sector, the Principal of Cao Thang Technical College said that high-tech enterprises investing in Ho Chi Minh City all use smart factories. The smarter the production stages, the simpler the labor force will be cut, instead, the use of robots will be increased. To operate this chain, workers must have high professional qualifications.

At the Southern Polytechnic College, the majors that many businesses are interested in "ordering" early include: automotive engineering technology, refrigeration and air conditioning engineering, industrial and civil electricity, restaurant services...

Master Tran Cong Nam, Principal of the Southern Polytechnic College, assessed that these are highly applicable majors. The number of students studying engineering at the school basically meets the local recruitment needs. However, in the near future, when urban and industrial development increases rapidly, the demand for technical human resources will increase even more.

According to Dr. Le Dinh Kha, enterprises are the "customers" using the "products" trained by the school. "Smart factories and high-tech enterprises require extremely high technical quality, must operate continuously 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Stable, high-quality human resources are the decisive factor to maintain this non-stop production cycle" - he emphasized.

Stay ahead of the trend

MSc. Pham Thai Son, Director of the Admissions and Communications Center - Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade, said that in the new school year, the school will have two more leading-trend majors: energy management and artificial intelligence (AI).

Key majors at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry and Trade such as mechanics, electronics and information technology will increase their enrollment quota by more than 400 students. The total enrollment quota for the next school year will increase by about 1,000 students.

According to the orientation of the Ministry of Education and Training , the training scale of the engineering - technology sector by 2030 is expected to reach more than 2.7 million university students. The key training fields and sectors that are oriented to be prioritized for development include: electrical engineering, electronics and telecommunications, mechanical engineering, mechatronics, control and automation, automotive engineering...

Associate Professor Dr. Truong Nguyen Luan Vu, Head of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering - Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education, said that after the merger, the city has more than 5,000 companies in the wood and furniture industry, with an export value of tens of billions of USD each year. Currently, the demand for labor in the wood and furniture industry is very large, while the school can only train about 60 students each year. In the next school year, the school plans to increase the enrollment target by 80-100 students to promptly provide some of the labor for the businesses that have placed orders.

Contrary to popular belief, the salary of wood and furniture engineers after graduation is very competitive. In fact, this salary is much higher than many "hot" information technology industries today, ranging from 10-20 million VND/month for new graduates.

"Currently, female students account for more than 50% of the number of students in this major. This major combines design and engineering, mainly working on computers and automatic processing. This major is very suitable for female students because of their high dexterity and aesthetics" - Associate Professor, Dr. Truong Nguyen Luan Vu commented.

Associate Professor, Dr. Truong Nguyen Luan Vu informed that the mechanical engineering - automation group is one of the 8 key training majors in the Ho Chi Minh City International Human Resources Training Project. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering - Ho Chi Minh City University of Technical Education is conducting training under "orders" directly from the City People's Committee with the specific goal of building a team of engineers with international standards.

The labor market is shifting.

According to Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Vocational Education Association, Vietnam is forecast to maintain strong economic growth in the next 3-5 years, leading to increased demand for labor in key sectors such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, tourism, digital economy, etc.

However, the labor market is witnessing a turning point: the demand for human resources will prioritize high skills, instead of just needing manual labor. At the same time, the development of automation and AI will gradually replace repetitive jobs. Therefore, many businesses focus on recruiting workers who know how to apply digital skills, analytical thinking, maintain high-end equipment...

Among the 9 industries with high demand for human resources by 2030, the industrial engineering sector is in the leading group. In particular, by 2030, the mechatronics industry is expected to need about 1.2 million workers.
