Mango prices are cheap, consumption is slow. |
Collision, market flooding
Currently, mangoes are grown all year round, with the peak season in April and May. Since this is the main season, mango output is high. Meanwhile, for more than a month now, mango prices have dropped sharply. According to gardeners, with the current low mango prices, the money from selling mangoes is not enough to cover the costs of fertilizers, sprays, and hiring workers to pick mangoes, etc.
The price of Taiwanese mangoes has dropped the most, at the garden it is only 2,000-4,000 VND/kg, sometimes even 1,000-1,500 VND/kg but there are still no traders coming to buy. Many Taiwanese mango farmers said that at this price, they are "sure to lose money".
Many people pick mangoes for retail sale but still do not earn much. Mr. Nguyen Van Phung (Trung Chanh commune, Vung Liem district) said: “My family has 2 hectares of Taiwanese mangoes, each year only processing 1 crop, previously sold for 10,000 VND/kg, with a yield of 3-4 tons/hectare, but now the price of mangoes is too low, traders have abandoned their deposits, refusing to buy. Last year, the price of mangoes was cheap, many people were discouraged and cut them down. This year, I tried to hold on to produce fruit but the price is still low.”
Not only Taiwanese mangoes, Cat Num, Cat Chu, and Hoa Loc mangoes are also surprisingly cheap in season. Mr. Nguyen Van Truc Linh - Director of Quoi Thien Cat Mango Cooperative (Quoi Thien Commune, Vung Liem District), said: "Mangoes are in season, without treatment, the trees will still flower and bear fruit, the harvest lasts from March to May. Therefore, the mango output is high, plus "collisions" with other fruits, causing the market to be "flooded".
If the price of Cat Chu mango at the beginning of the season was 15,000-20,000 VND/kg, now it is only about 5,000-6,000 VND/kg, but there are few traders coming to buy. Although the cost of this season is not as high as the off-season, because the price of fertilizer and pesticides is still high, plus the increase in labor costs, farmers do not make a profit, or even suffer losses.
At some markets, many traders also said that mangoes are selling quite slowly and at low prices, although the quality is good and the appearance is beautiful. Ms. Le Thi Hong, a trader at Phuoc Tho market (Ward 8, Vinh Long city), said: "The main season mangoes are delicious and cheap, but because purchasing power is not high, there is a lot of stock. When fresh, Cat Chu mangoes cost 25,000-30,000 VND/kg, but after a few days, the price will gradually decrease, to only 10,000-20,000 VND/kg. I also reduced the price sharply to sell out as quickly as possible, otherwise the mangoes will spoil and I will suffer a loss."
Sustainable development measures are needed.
According to the functional sector, in recent times, mango growers have increasingly gained experience in production, applied safe food production processes, spread out crops, gradually changed awareness and increased the use of organic fertilizers in production and fruit bagging, which has helped improve product quality and value.
At the same time, growing a variety of mango varieties to meet consumption needs. However, market demands are increasingly high, mango production in many places is still small and scattered, making it difficult for investment, quality management, and product consumption. Farmers still lack market information and certified production is still modest, product preservation and processing stages are also weak, there is a lack of close linkage between parties, and product output prices are unstable...
Mr. Duong Ai Dao - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vung Liem district, said: The whole district has about 1,100 hectares of mango. Currently, the price of mango has decreased sharply, of which the cheapest is Taiwanese mango, only from 1,000-3,000 VND/kg, the reason for the decrease is due to slow consumption market and high supply.
To sell mangoes at a high price, mango growers need to expand the model of growing mangoes in different seasons; reorganize production in the form of cooperative links, and overcome the situation of falling prices due to concentrated output at one time. In addition, it is also necessary to pay attention to post-harvest care of the trees, not to neglect the trees because of low prices, to update the weather situation, to have measures to manage pests, and to apply appropriate fertilizers to restore the trees.
There needs to be a sustainable development solution for the mango industry. |
According to Mr. Nguyen Van Liem - Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, to sustainably develop the fruit industry, including mango, gardeners need to synchronously apply technical advances to increase productivity, reduce some unnecessary costs such as balanced and technical fertilization, limit spraying pesticides when not necessary, how to get the highest fruit yield with the lowest cost. At the same time, it is necessary to improve the quality of fruit, it is important to reorganize production, link "four houses" in planting, preserving, processing, building brands, promoting trade...
Mr. Nguyen Van Liem - Deputy Director of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Currently, the demand for tropical fruits in countries around the world is very large, requiring the development of fruit production in the direction of high technology and the connection between provinces and cities in the region. From there, there are specific plans for infrastructure projects, strategic visions, serving the whole region to have cooperation and mutual sharing, ensuring mutual benefits and creating stronger competitiveness. |
