With Sesko, Newcastle United could have a dream team worth £620m. |
After a summer dominated by speculation over Alexander Isak's future and failures to sign top targets, manager Eddie Howe could receive a major boost to his squad if Benjamin Sesko arrives.
The Times believes Newcastle are close to signing Sesko. Even if they have to sell Isak to Liverpool, Newcastle still have a bright future. The money from Isak's sale will help the Magpies reinvest in other positions in the squad, making them significantly stronger.
Newcastle made two big deals this summer, with Anthony Elanga bought from Nottingham Forest for £55m, followed by the loan of goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton, with an option to buy.
Ramsdale will compete with Nick Pope for the number one spot, and if Newcastle complete a few more big-money signings before the transfer window closes, they could have a formidable squad. Sesko's arrival would help offset the potential departure of Isak, while Elanga and Anthony Gordon would compete with Harvey Barnes and Jacob Murphy on the flanks.
The midfield trio that impressed last season – Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton – continue to be the mainstays of the team, with Lewis Hall’s return from injury meaning Tino Livramento can return to his usual right-back position.

Newcastle's ideal squad would cost more than £650m. |
Fabian Schar and Dan Burn have been excellent in recent seasons, but new centre-back pairing Sven Botman and Marc Guehi could be the bedrock of Newcastle's defence for years to come.
Crystal Palace centre-back Guehi is seen by Newcastle as a potential signing, with the club ready to pay £40m for the England star. Brentford striker Yoane Wissa remains a potential transfer target for Newcastle.
With Wissa, the Magpies' attacking depth will be extremely scary. Nick Pope may be the first choice in goal, but if he falls short, Ramsdale can take over this position.
Whether Newcastle can make any more big-money signings before the transfer window closes remains to be seen, with a squad worth an estimated £600m to £650m if they do.
