VnExpressVnExpress11/05/2023

Yen Bai The famous terraced fields in La Pan Tan, Mu Cang Chai district are all bare due to prolonged drought, even though it is the flooding season.

On May 7, taking advantage of a business trip to Yen Bai, Mr. Ky Vong, from Hanoi , and a group of friends went to the famous Mam Xoi hill in La Pan Tan commune to visit the terraced fields. After taking a motorbike taxi from the foot of the mountain, Mr. Vong was surprised to see the bare, lifeless fields due to the prolonged drought.

"We thought it was the flood season like every year so we went to Mu Cang Chai without doing any research. Everyone was disappointed with the trip," he said.

Ly A Do, a tour guide to Mam Xoi Hill in La Pan Tan Commune, said that this year the water came late due to lack of rain. Usually, from April to mid-May, people go to the fields to plow and prepare for planting, but currently the fields still have no water.

"Every year at this time, the rice fields are very beautiful and crowded with visitors," said Mr. Do. Last year, he led groups of dozens of people to visit and take photos. This year, he has turned away many visitors because the Mam Xoi hill area does not have water yet.

Mr. Giang A Sau, Chairman of the People's Committee of La Pan Tan Commune, said that normally when there is a lot of water from the upstream, people will dig canals to bring water to the fields for plowing. This year, there is little rain and water, so they have only been able to plow 4-5 fields.

"Droughts happen every year, but this year they are longer. There has been no rain in the La Pan Tan area for many days. The ideal time for visitors to see the flooding season is May, but it's almost mid-month and there's still no rain so we don't know what will happen," said Mr. Sau.

According to Mr. Sau, last year during the flood season, La Pan Tan welcomed about 6,000 visitors. This year, the number of visitors has reached less than 1,000.

About 330 hectares of terraced fields in three communes of La Pan Tan (including Mam Xoi hill), Che Cu Nha, and De Xu Phinh were ranked as one of the most unique landscapes in Vietnam in 2007. By 2019, Mu Cang Chai terraced fields were ranked as a special national monument. In addition to the flooding season, in September and October, Mam Xoi hill is one of the most beautiful places to see the ripe rice season in the North.

Drought is also occurring in many places in the northern mountainous region, including Ban Gioc waterfall ( Cao Bang ).
