Specifically, the earthquake occurred in Houaphan province (Laos), about 5km from the Vietnam border, in Na Meo commune, Thanh Hoa province, at 23:26:19 on November 12.
The Institute of Earth Sciences said the earthquake had a magnitude of 4.8, a focal depth of about 10 km, and a level 1 disaster risk on a scale of 5. Because the epicenter was about 150 km from Hanoi, many residents of the capital felt the shaking clearly.
On the 12th floor of an apartment building in the Bac Tu Liem area of Hanoi , Ms. Doan Xuan Huong said that she was lying down when she felt the walls and curtains shake violently for about 10 seconds. Mr. Nguyen Van Bang, who lives in a 5-story house in the My Dinh area, said that his family's camera system recorded a motorbike parked in the yard shaking and moving for a few seconds.
Previously, on November 7, an earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred in Binh Thuan commune, Son La province, with a focal depth of about 10 km.
Houaphan Province (Laos) borders Thanh Hoa (Vietnam) and is located on the Ma River fault zone, stretching from Dien Bien , Lai Chau down to Quan Son (Thanh Hoa) and into Laos. This area often experiences small earthquakes due to the activity of the fault zone.
