4.8 magnitude earthquake in Laos, 5 km from Vietnam border

(Chinhphu.vn) - A 4.8 magnitude earthquake occurred in Houaphan province, Laos, about 5km from the Vietnam border in Na Meo commune, Thanh Hoa province.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) said that at 23:26:19 (Hanoi time) on November 12, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred at the coordinates (20.373 degrees North latitude, 104.572 degrees East longitude), with a focal depth of about 10 km.

The earthquake occurred in Houaphan province, Laos, about 5km from the Vietnam border in Na Meo commune, Thanh Hoa province. Disaster risk level 1.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Earth Sciences Institute) is continuing to monitor this earthquake.

In Vietnam, last night, many people living in high-rise apartments in Hanoi and some neighboring localities such as Son La, Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa said they clearly felt the shaking.

Previously, on November 11, 6 consecutive earthquakes also occurred in Da Nang and Quang Ngai with magnitude of 3.3 or less, causing no damage to people or property.

Since January 1st, the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center has recorded more than 300 earthquakes in Vietnam's territory and sea.
