The earthquake occurred in Houaphan province (Laos) - about 5km from the Vietnam border in Thanh Hoa province.

On the morning of November 13, information from the Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center (Institute of Earth Sciences ) said that at 11:26 p.m. on November 12, in Houaphan province (Laos) - about 5km from the Vietnam border in Thanh Hoa province - a strong earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred. The focal depth was about 10km.

Although the earthquake occurred in Laos, people in Hanoi , Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An,... still felt the tremors from this earthquake.

The Earthquake Information and Tsunami Warning Center assessed this earthquake as having a level 1 natural disaster risk and is continuing to monitor it.

According to the Institute of Earth Sciences, in Vietnam, scientists consider earthquakes of magnitude 4-5 to be minor earthquakes. However, these earthquakes can still lead to shaking, especially in the location of high-rise buildings. These earthquakes usually cause no damage or minor damage.

In Hanoi, experts say this is an area with poor ground so it is easy to feel tremors when there is a large earthquake elsewhere.

In recent times, the Hanoi area has experienced tremors due to the influence of earthquake aftershocks from neighboring countries such as Laos, China, Thailand, and Myanmar.

In addition, Hanoi is located in the Red River-Chay River fault zone, where earthquakes of magnitude 5.1-5.5 have occurred. Normally, the recurrence cycle of a magnitude 5.3 earthquake in Hanoi is 1,100 years and the last strong earthquake occurred more than 700 years ago (1285).

Recently, at 5:46 p.m. on August 26, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake occurred in Cao Duong commune, Phu Tho province. At that time, some people living in Hanoi also said they felt slight shaking for a short time.

Since the beginning of the year, the Institute of Earth Sciences has recorded more than 430 small earthquakes. Most of the earthquakes are concentrated in Quang Ngai province (formerly Kon Tum province). Some small earthquakes occurred in localities such as Quang Nam, Son La, Hue city, Thanh Hoa, Phu Tho...
