During 2 days of fighting, 42 gunmen of Battalion 502 completely destroyed Company 12, Company 7 and the Command Board of Battalion 3 of Regiment 43, Division 23 of Saigon; defeated the Regiment-level operation organized by the Northern Division... In addition, Battalion 502 also performed well in military propaganda, education, reformation, and release of prisoners of war. The unit was awarded many Military Exploit Medals, thousands of officers and soldiers were awarded Orders and Medals of various types, and was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President in 1976. After the reunification, Battalion 502 fulfilled its international obligations to help Cambodia and continued to promote the tradition of a heroic unit, ready to fight to build an increasingly strong force.

Dear comrades:

The victory of Giong Thi Dam - Go Quan Cung was the first outstanding feat of the local army unit of the province when it had just taken the oath to change its name to Battalion 502 for 3 days; it was the earliest and greatest military victory. The historic victory of Giong Thi Dam - Go Quan Cung entered the legend of the resistance war against the US to save the country, likened to the "first thunder of the season" that started the struggle in the South.

To mark the heroic historical event and educate the revolutionary tradition to the younger generation, in August 1998, the Provincial Party Committee - People's Committee of Dong Thap province initiated the construction of the Giong Thi Dam - Go Quan Cung Victory Monument. On December 22, 2000, the project was completed and put into use on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the founding of the Vietnam People's Army (December 22, 1944 - December 22, 2000).

In 2004, the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) ranked the Giong Thi Dam - Go Quan Cung Victory Monument as a National Monument.

The overall layout of the monument was outlined by author Pham Muoi - Former Head of Vietnam's sculpture industry with 03 characters standing on a boat cutting through the waves on the vast water in a ready-to-fight posture with the belief in victory. The monument is 25m high made of reinforced concrete, the pedestal is covered with marble, built on a campus of 50,000m2.
