The Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association (VPSA) forecasts that global pepper output in 2025 will continue to decrease compared to 2024, as pepper is no longer the main crop. This is especially true in the context of increased competition from other crops, along with the increasing cost of maintaining pepper production.

Besides, climate change is becoming increasingly severe, affecting pepper growing areas in many countries such as Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Brazil, leading to a significant decrease in output.

According to statistics, domestic pepper prices continuously increased right after Tet, with a sharp increase of 8,500 - 10,800 VND/kg compared to last week. This helped local farmers enter the new harvest season with excitement.

Experts say that with increasing global consumption demand, pepper prices are likely to continue to increase sharply from early 2025, opening up development opportunities for the pepper production and export industry.

According to Ptexim, from a market perspective, on average from 2019 to 2024, China imported 40,736 tons of pepper from Vietnam (including two years of lockdown due to Covid-19 in 2021 and 2022).

However, by 2024, China will import only 10,549 tons, down 82.4% from 2023 and down 74% from the average import volume over the past six years.

Therefore, Ptexim believes that if the Chinese market increases imports again, pepper prices will increase sharply. In case the Chinese market maintains a slow import level, pepper prices will still increase, but at a slower rate.
