130kg tourist spends more than 80 million VND to hire 9 people to carry him up the mountain to see the scenery

(Dan Tri) - A Chinese tourist weighing more than 130kg caused a stir in public opinion when he spent 22,100 yuan (more than 80 million VND) to hire 9 people to take turns carrying him on a palanquin for the entire 42km journey up and down Nga Mi Mountain.

According to United Daily , the incident happened on August 15. The guest from Jiangsu (Zhejiang) contacted Mr. Phuong - a person who specializes in renting palanquins at the tourist area - to be taken to the Temple of the God of Wealth located halfway up Mount Emei (Sichuan).

Because of this tourist's special weight - more than 130kg - the normal palanquins could not accommodate him. Therefore, a large palanquin was specially made for him.

According to regulations, a 3km round trip is usually carried by 2 palanquin bearers, costing about 480 yuan (more than 1.7 million VND). However, this case requires 9 people to coordinate: two groups of 4 people taking turns carrying the palanquin and one guide, ensuring the safety and health of the whole group.

The trip lasted 10 hours, covering 21km up the mountain and another 21km down, even through the rain along the way. The tourists were said to be cheerful and friendly, not even needing an umbrella while walking and even shouting in rhythm with the porters.

At the end of the journey, he also "tipped" the porters 900 yuan (about 3.3 million VND). In fact, the salary each porter received was higher than the usual income, but in return, the labor was many times harder.

The incident has sparked a wave of debate on Chinese social media. Some people believe that "if you have money, you have the right to do whatever you want", and that tourists can buy services according to their needs.

Many others expressed sympathy for the porters, and hoped that the resort's management board would take measures to protect workers' rights, such as providing anti-slip equipment or setting a maximum weight limit.

On the other hand, many people see this as just a negotiated transaction: Workers put in their effort, tourists pay for the service, so there is nothing to argue about.
