Travel in 2025 will no longer be about simply exploring new places. Instead, travelers will seek more personalized, unique, and meaningful experiences.
Expedia has just released its 2025 travel forecast, based on massive booking data from Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo, combined with a survey of 25,000 global travelers. The report reveals unique trends that will shape travel in the coming year, with many engaging experiences that go beyond traditional destinations.
1. The "Go to take away" trend
Social media continues to shape travel behavior, but 2025 will take this trend to the next level with “unique shopping trips” – or “Goods Getaways.” From the latest chocolate bars in Dubai to skincare products in Korea, travelers aren’t afraid to build entire itineraries just to bring back “photo-worthy” items.
According to a survey by Expedia, 39% of travelers have a habit of visiting local grocery stores when traveling, while 44% prioritize shopping for unique products that are not available at home.
2. All-Inclusives: All-inclusive vacations reign supreme
All-inclusive resorts are increasingly popular with discerning millennials who value convenience and luxury, and major corporations such as Hyatt, Marriott and Hilton have aggressively expanded their portfolios.
A notable example is Hyatt Vivid, a newly launched all-inclusive concept, or W Hotels, which will open its first all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic in 2025. According to Expedia, searches using the “all-inclusive” filter have increased by 60% year-over-year.
3. The Renaissance of Hotel Restaurants
Hotels are investing heavily in restaurants, transforming them into destinations. A standout is San Laurel at the Conrad Los Angeles, helmed by celebrity chef José Andrés. In Maui, Ferraro's Restaurant & Bar at the Four Seasons has reopened as the only beachfront restaurant in Wailea.
About 31% of travelers said they would book a room if a hotel restaurant reserved a table for in-house guests.
4. Interesting side destinations
Instead of finding alternative (dupe) destinations, 2025 will see the trend of "Detour Destinations" - exploring nearby locations as a side trip.
Here are 10 outstanding "detour" destinations:
Reims, France (near Paris)
Brescia, Italy (near Milan)
Cozumel, Mexico (near Cancun)
Santa Barbara, USA (near Los Angeles)
Krabi, Thailand (near Phuket)...
5. Natural phenomena attract tourists
Natural phenomena continue to be a powerful source of inspiration for travel. In 2025, locations like Arches National Park (USA) with its brilliant starry sky or Hokkaido (Japan) with its "dancing white cranes" will take center stage. Other notable events include:
Bioluminescence phenomenon in Vero Beach, Florida.
Black Sun Starling Festival in Denmark.
The Northern Lights are brilliant in Lapland, Finland.
6. “Set-Jetting” continues to reign
Travel inspired by movies and TV shows is still booming. According to Expedia, two-thirds of travelers say they choose their destinations based on the captivating scenes on screen. Movies and reality shows like The White Lotus and The Real Housewives of Dubai continue to have a strong influence on travel decisions.
From exciting “hunting” trips, all-inclusive vacation trends, to exploring amazing nature, Expedia’s report shows that travel in 2025 will not only be about destinations, but also about unique and meaningful experiences. With a diversity of needs and approaches, the coming year promises to be a vibrant and creative period for the global travel industry.
