According to statistics from the authorities: On average, each guest will generate about 1.2 kg of garbage/person/day and night. For non-guests, it is 0.5 kg/person/day and night. It will be "not worth much" for an individual, or for several groups of guests. But it will be a huge amount of garbage accumulated over the years and many years. If not handled effectively, things that seem simply garbage will create great pressure on the environment for people.

It is noted that in recent years, Thai Nguyen tourism industry has developed rapidly and strongly. Accordingly, the amount of waste from tourists has also increased dramatically, about 900 tons of waste in 2021; 4,500 tons of waste in 2024 and 7,500 tons of waste in 2025.

Although the authorities, sectors and localities with tourist attractions have implemented many propaganda activities, mobilizing people and tourists to dispose of garbage in the right place, the situation of littering still occurs. At many festivals at the beginning of the year, there are still cases of littering and defecating in the wrong place. People and tourists participating in festivals sometimes do not have full awareness of protecting the relic space and the natural environment.

To minimize the impact on the ecological environment, every year the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has proactively advised the Provincial People's Committee to issue many documents directing and guiding all levels, sectors and localities to implement measures to ensure environmental hygiene in tourism activities, organize festivals and preserve relics. The Department also regularly strengthens management, inspection, and organizes training for tourism officials, employees, tourism businesses, owners of establishments and destinations on tourism operations, including the integration of environmental protection work.

Organizations, businesses, tourist areas and spots are required by the provincial authorities to strictly comply with environmental protection regulations, invest in upgrading waste collection, classification and treatment systems. Some large hotels and key tourist areas have built standard wastewater treatment systems, with specialized staff to monitor and guide tourists in implementing environmental sanitation regulations.

The Department has also regularly encouraged tourist accommodation establishments to apply the “Green Lotus” standard, a set of standards on environmental protection and sustainable development for tourist establishments. Thanks to the drastic participation of all levels and sectors, the environmental quality in tourist areas, destinations and accommodation establishments has gradually improved. The environmental pollution situation has gradually been overcome, contributing to enhancing the image of green - clean - friendly Thai Nguyen tourism.

Through propaganda and gentle reminders to those who do not leave trash in the right place, many people have become more conscious when visiting tourist attractions by putting trash in the bins or limiting the amount of snacks they bring. Many households near the area and destination have also voluntarily participated in the movement to build green tourist areas, contributing to creating a friendly and hospitable image of Thai Nguyen people in the eyes of tourists.

Thai Nguyen tourism is moving towards sustainable development, friendly to the environment. Each destination is not only a place to preserve cultural and historical values, but also a green living space for the community.
