The St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra is the oldest and most prestigious orchestra of the Russian Federation. The orchestra is recognized by international experts as “one of the most prestigious orchestras in the world and also the most important orchestra in the history of Russia”. The formation of the orchestra originated from the decree of July 16, 1882 of Emperor Alexander III with the request to form the Imperial Music Choir, later the Imperial Symphony Orchestra.
In 1917, the Royal Orchestra became the State Orchestra and was led by conductor and composer Serge Koussevitzky. In 1921, the orchestra opened its first Philharmonia. Many famous musicians/composers/conductors of the time conducted the orchestra, including legendary names such as Bruno Walter, Felix Weingartner, Hermann Abendroth, Oskar Fried, Erich Kleiber, Pierre Monteux and Otto Klemperer; soloists such as Vladimir Horowitz and Sergei Prokofiev also performed with the music.

In 1934, the orchestra was awarded the title of “Orchestra of Honor of Russia”, the first Russian orchestra to be awarded this title. In 1946, the orchestra performed for the first time in another country, which also marked a major turning point in the history of Russian classical music. After this event, the orchestra regularly organized tours around the world and had the honor of performing at famous music festivals in Europe. In 1988, Yuri Temirkanov was appointed conductor of the orchestra. During his many years of operation, his leadership received many positive reviews from the media: “The orchestra is like a national treasure, conductor Yuri Temirkanov is also one of the best conductors in the world”…
In January 2022, Yuri Temirkanov completed his final term as Chief Conductor of the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra and will continue to serve as Artistic Director of the two orchestras as well as the St Petersburg Philharmonia after more than two decades in this position. Nikolay Alexeev, who has been associated with the orchestra for more than twenty years, was chosen as Yuri Temirkanov's successor.
In “White Night – White Nights in St. Petersburg”, Maestro Nikolay Alexeev will conduct the orchestra. The program will also feature two artists: Alexey Tikhomirov, a guest soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre since 2010 and soloist of the New Opera Theatre in Moscow since 2015; Yekaterina Sergeeva, an artist who has toured with the Mariinsky Theatre in Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States.
