Harvesting carrots in Cao Duc commune ( Bac Ninh province).
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said the entire region strives to plant 400-410 thousand hectares of winter crops, with an estimated output of 4.8-5 million tons.
Diversify crops and spread out harvests
In recent days, in many fields of Hung Yen province, people have been busy harvesting the summer-autumn rice to make way for winter crops. As soon as the rice is harvested, tractors are mobilized to turn the soil and make ridges, creating favorable conditions for winter crops to enter the season. In the highland fields, people have planted corn and vegetables in some areas. At the same time, other areas are being concentrated on ridges, waiting for the water to dry so that cold-loving crops can be brought to the fields.
Director of Yen Phu General Agricultural Service Cooperative, Nguyen Huu Hung, said that farmers are looking forward to the winter crop, because this is the "golden crop" with the highest yield and profit of the year. This year, although the beginning of the season was full of rain and floods, causing many difficulties for people, up to now, the weather has been very favorable, the plants are growing well, promising a bumper crop.
To ensure output and stabilize prices, the cooperative proactively grows a variety of vegetables such as cabbage, tomatoes, cauliflower, kohlrabi, and carrots. Along with that, the cooperative applies the technique of spreading the crop, dividing it into three planting periods to regulate supply. Of which, early tea is expected to be harvested in mid-November, medium tea will focus on serving the Lunar New Year and late tea after Tet.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Hung Yen province, the locality strives to plant 43,100 hectares of winter vegetables and crops. The province chooses to cultivate high-quality crop varieties that bring high economic efficiency and suit market tastes. In particular, it focuses on plants with long shelf life and can provide raw materials for processing such as zucchini, pumpkin, cucumber, tomato, and potato.
Hung Yen has set a target for each locality to build at least two to three “large-scale, concentrated production fields” for winter crops with an area of 10 hectares or more. Along with that, strengthen links with businesses in winter crop production to increase income and economic efficiency for people.
In Hai Phong, according to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment Luong Thi Kiem, the city strives to plant about 29,200 hectares of winter crops. Of which, the area of vegetables of all kinds is 22,200 hectares, with an estimated output of about 650,000 tons. The locality maintains, expands and develops large-scale concentrated commodity production areas, linked to the value chain and associated with brand building, geographical indications and trademarks such as carrots, cabbage, kohlrabi, cauliflower, and tomatoes.
According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment), in the 2025 winter crop, the crop structure will be evenly distributed, with 50% of the area being warm-loving crops (corn, sweet potatoes, soybeans, warm-loving vegetables) and the remaining 50% being cold-loving crops (potatoes, cold-loving vegetables).
Along with crop diversification, many localities have paid attention to planting in different seasons to reduce pressure on consumption. In addition, some provinces have also expanded the area of crops with good and stable consumption markets such as baby cucumbers, chili, zucchini, pumpkin, processed potatoes, medicinal plants, edible mushrooms, and medicinal mushrooms.
Adhere to production plans and time frames
Deputy Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (Ministry of Agriculture and Environment) Nguyen Quoc Manh said that for the winter crop to be successful, the departments of agriculture and environment of northern provinces and cities need to focus on mobilizing all resources to restore production, striving to achieve and exceed the planned targets.
Localities took advantage of sunny weather conditions to prepare the land for early winter crop planting, ensuring the season; directed farmers to actively care for and protect the warm-loving winter crop area affected by storms and floods.
Along with that, replanting dead or weak plants that are difficult to recover. For warm-loving plants, it is necessary to choose the appropriate seed structure and plant as soon as possible; for legumes, it is necessary to arrange planting in many fields to effectively exploit land conditions and labor, avoid price drops and increase economic efficiency.
At the same time, it is necessary to invest in intensive farming and increase the number of crops by growing cold-loving, short-term leafy vegetables and root vegetables. In particular, it is necessary to continue to spread out the crops and sow them on high land, high hills, and specialized vegetable land to harvest products as soon as possible, to ensure the supply of vegetables to the market, especially before and after Tet.
According to Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Trung, localities need to monitor and closely follow the weather situation, proactively develop and implement effective production plans, ensuring the assigned growth targets of the industry. Comply with the crop production plan, pest control measures according to the instructions developed by the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection. Prepare adequate cold-proof coverings, short-term seeds and spare materials to promptly restore production when natural disasters occur.
Deploy and replicate effective, profitable, and sustainable farming and association models; transfer technical advances, models, and advanced farming processes to improve productivity, agricultural product quality, and adapt to climate change in the northern region. Mr. Trung also requested localities to promote association, develop raw material areas, and apply mechanization and processing.
Strengthen trade promotion, connect supply and demand, support brand building and traceability for key products. At the same time, regularly update market information so that localities can have reasonable and effective plans for production and consumption of agricultural products.
