Many hydroelectric reservoirs of EVN are seriously lacking water for electricity generation.
Serious shortage of water for power generation
On May 16, EVN said that the company had sent documents to the People's Committees of provinces and cities, requesting that localities direct the implementation of electricity saving during this year's hot season when the electricity supply situation is forecast to be very difficult.
According to EVN, due to the impact of the El Nino phenomenon, heat, drought, and water shortages have seriously affected hydroelectric reservoirs.
Statistics as of May 11 show that 11/47 large hydroelectric reservoirs have reached or are near dead water level, including: Lai Chau, Trung Son, Dong Nai 2, Buon Tua Srah, Huong Son, Tri An, Ialy, Song Ba Ha, Xekaman 1, Dakr Tih, Se San 4.
In addition, 21/47 large hydroelectric reservoirs have remaining capacity of less than 20% such as Son La , Tuyen Quang, Thac Ba... Besides, 16 other reservoirs currently have water levels lower than the minimum water level of the inter-reservoir operation process.
In particular, hydroelectric reservoirs in the Northern region have 12/12 large hydroelectric reservoirs with very poor water flow, the frequency of water flowing to many reservoirs is the worst in the past 100 years (as of May 11, 2023).
In April and early May, water in the lakes was only below 50% of the average of many years, some lakes only reached 20% compared to the average of many years, causing a serious water shortage for hydroelectric reservoirs...
Power workers repair power lines to ensure power supply to people during the hot season.
50% discount on advertising, entertainment and outdoor lighting
EVN also said that at the beginning of this year's hot season, it recorded an increasing demand for electricity and forecasted that demand would increase especially during the peak hot season from May to July.
Specifically, on May 6, although it was a weekend and right after the April 30 - May 1 holiday, the electricity demand of the national power system increased to a new record of approximately 895 million kWh, the highest since the beginning of the year and an increase of 12.34% over the same period in May 2022; the maximum consumption capacity reached 43,300 MW, the highest since the beginning of the year and an increase of 9.12% over the same period in May 2022.
Based on the above situation, in the document, EVN requested localities to step up communication about the difficult electricity supply situation this year on local mass media so that organizations, agencies, businesses and people know, share difficulties and increase electricity saving practices.
Localities direct agencies and units to strengthen solutions on electricity saving and voluntary non-commercial electricity load adjustment (DR).
Of which, administrative units save 10% of monthly electricity consumption compared to the same period. Schools, hospitals, clinics, dispensaries, and nursing homes save 5% of monthly electricity consumption compared to the same period.
In particular, public lighting units; restaurants, hotels, commercial service establishments, office complexes and apartment buildings... apply measures to save 50% of monthly electricity consumption compared to the same period; reduce outdoor advertising and decorative lighting at night,...
EVN also requested localities to step up inspection of compliance with the Law on Economical and Efficient Use of Energy; and Directive No. 20/CT-TTg dated May 7, 2020; take measures to handle individuals and organizations that do not comply...
Previously, on April 28, EVN sent a document reporting to the Ministry of Industry and Trade on the critical situation of electricity supply, in which it recommended that the Ministry of Industry and Trade direct the implementation of many urgent solutions to overcome difficulties in electricity supply, not only for the hot season of 2023 but also for the coming years.
