According to ASEAN Football , the appearance of Gianni Infantino at the 2025 AFF Congress is considered an important milestone for the plan to launch the FIFA ASEAN Cup. This tournament is part of the FIFA system, different from the ASEAN Cup and is expected to be held during FIFA Days from 2027. This is also the first time Southeast Asia has a tournament in the FIFA competition calendar system.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup was launched on October 26 after ASEAN and FIFA signed a memorandum of understanding at the ASEAN Summit in Malaysia. The signing ceremony was conducted by FIFA President and ASEAN Secretary General, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, witnessed by Malaysian Prime Minister and ASEAN Chairman, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The agreement opens up a common development direction between the two sides, with the aim of elevating Southeast Asian football and creating an official playground for 10-11 regional teams.
ASEAN Football commented that the coordination between ASEAN leaders and FIFA is going “smoothly”, helping the project get closer and closer to the actual implementation stage. This is considered a positive signal, especially when Southeast Asian football is facing many difficulties in terms of competition schedules and overlap between international tournaments and national championships.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup, if implemented on schedule, could change the competition structure of Southeast Asian football, raise competition standards and open a new era for national teams in the region.
