Filipe Luis causes a stir as a coach

In modern football, managerial debuts are often judged by immediate impact - and few can do that better than Filipe Luis.

Filipe Luis is showing his cool with Flamengo.

After less than 30 games in charge of Flamengo's first team, the former Atletico Madrid defender has helped the club win three major trophies. A dream start for someone new to the world of professional coaching.

Impressive journey

Filipe Luis was appointed as Flamengo’s head coach in October 2024, following the team’s Copa Libertadores quarter-final exit at the hands of Penarol. That defeat not only ended Flamengo’s continental journey, but also ended Tite’s tenure as coach.

That was the turning point for Filipe - who was then leading the Flamengo U20 team - to be "promoted" to the hot seat. Before that, he had made a splash when he led the youth team to win the U20 Intercontinental Cup in August of the same year, as a sign of things to come.

It didn’t take long for the former Brazil international to make his mark. His first-team debut came in a win over Corinthians – a solid start, but little did anyone expect Flamengo to go on to an impressive run of success. On 10 November, just over a month after taking charge, Filipe Luis brought home his first trophy: the prestigious Copa do Brasil.

Coach Filipe Luis is a phenomenon in world football.

Continuing the momentum, Flamengo entered the Brazilian Super Cup (Supercopa do Brasil) against the reigning national champions and Libertadores - Botafogo - and won on February 2, 2025. Just over a month later, on March 16, Flamengo continued to overcome Fluminense in the final of the Rio de Janeiro state championship (Carioca) to complete the hat-trick of titles.

Three trophies in 24 games. An average of one trophy every eight games - an "unprecedented" performance for any coach, especially for one who has been in coaching for less than half a year.

During that time, Filipe Luis - who is only 39 - has won more titles than he has lost - a statistic that speaks not only to his tactical mastery, but also to his impressive man-management skills.

It is worth noting that Filipe Luis' coaching style is not modeled after anyone else's, even though he has played under many famous coaches such as Diego Simeone or Luiz Felipe Scolari. Filipe Luis's Flamengo is an organized, scientific and energetic team - a combination of European discipline and the fire of South American football.

The students played with confidence, sharpness, and seemed to be "liberated" from the conservative playing style that existed under their predecessor.

Dream start at Club World Cup

Now, as Flamengo step onto the world stage at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™, all eyes are on Filipe Luis - no longer the hard-working left-back on the pitch, but the tactical architect on the touchline. In their opening match, Flamengo defeated Esperance de Tunis - the representative from Tunisia - 2-0 on the morning of June 17.

There is no doubt that Flamengo are clearly the favorites, not only because of the quality of their players but also because of the clear identity that the young coach has managed to portray. The developments on the pitch also showed the superiority of the Brazilian club - the team controlled the ball 69%, creating an xG (expected goals ratio) of up to 1.24.

If anyone thought Filipe Luis’ remarkable journey was just a short “honeymoon”, the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup™ will be the place to prove it. This is a tournament where the smallest mistakes can cost you defeat, and every tactical calculation is scrutinized down to the last detail.

With their current status, Flamengo cannot be considered “apprentices”, and Filipe Lus himself is no longer viewed with the lenient eyes of a young, emerging coach. Expectations have arrived - and the real challenge begins.

However, one thing cannot be denied: what Filipe Luis has done in less than 30 matches is an admirable phenomenon in Brazilian football. In a harsh environment, where trust in domestic or young coaches is always fragile, he stepped up with composure, courage and concrete results. No noise, no tricks, only victory and titles as a measure.

From a defender famous for his quiet but effective playing style, Filipe Luis is now writing a new convincing chapter: a young, intelligent, brave coach with plenty of potential to go far. And if he continues to maintain his current form, it is very likely that the name Filipe Luis will not only cause a stir in Brazil, but also soon enter the ranks of formidable strategists in world football.
