Dortmund will begin their journey at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup by facing Brazilian representative Fluminense at MetLife Stadium at 11:00 tonight (Vietnam time).
Fluminense are no strangers to this tournament. They reached the final of the 2023 Club World Cup but lost 0-4 to Manchester City.
This time, the “Tricolor” came to the US in a fairly stable form. They are currently ranked 6th in the Brazilian National Championship with 20 points, after defeating Internacional 2-0 on June 2.
It is worth noting that Fluminense's scoring ability is showing signs of improvement. In just the last 4 matches, they have scored 10 goals, equal to the total number of goals in the previous 9 matches combined. The Brazilian team has scored at least 2 goals in 6 of the last 7 matches, and in all 4 of the last matches, they have scored in the first half.
Fluminense’s defense also provides peace of mind. Coach Renato Gaúcho’s team has kept a clean sheet in the last 2 matches and is on a 6-match unbeaten streak (5 wins, 1 draw). This achievement shows clear stability compared to the previous 7-match streak where they only won 2, drew 2 and lost 3.
As for Dortmund, although this is their first time participating in the FIFA Club World Cup, the German team is still highly rated. They received a place to participate thanks to their good performance in the last 4 seasons in the Champions League, notably reaching the final of the 2023/24 season.
Last season in the Bundesliga, Dortmund finished in 4th place with 57 points and qualified for the Champions League. Much of the credit goes to coach Niko Kovac – who took over from Nuri Sahin in January, when Dortmund were still struggling in 11th place in the rankings.
Under Kovac's leadership, Dortmund made a strong breakthrough with a series of 6 consecutive wins, remaining unbeaten in the last 7 rounds of the season.
Dortmund's attack is in great form. They have scored a total of 20 goals in just their last 6 matches, and have scored at least 2 times in 10 of their last 12 matches. However, the concern is still in the defense as the team has conceded 13 goals in their last 8 matches.
The clash between two technically gifted teams - one from Europe, one from South America - promises to be a goal-fest, especially as both are in impressive form and have many outstanding attacking players.
