According to experts, the difference between generations of gaming consoles is becoming increasingly difficult to notice, especially between 4K and 8K resolutions. That makes many gamers no longer interested in upgrading their devices.
Many gamers feel that the new generation of consoles is not worth the increased cost.
Data from analytics agencies shows that the number of households owning a game console has not changed significantly in more than a decade. Many gamers are reluctant to switch to new consoles because they don’t see a compelling reason to do so. While manufacturers may try to promote that new versions are more powerful and faster, this is not enough to boost sales if consumers can’t tell the difference.
High-end gaming consoles are not enough to convince gamers
Sony recently launched the PlayStation 5 Pro for $700, which uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to improve frame rates and image quality for at least 82 games. However, interest in the product has been lower than expected. As a result, analyst firm Niko Partners predicts that PS5 Pro sales will only account for about 10% of total PS5 sales by the end of its lifecycle, lower than the PS4 and PS4 Pro.
The same is true for Microsoft’s Xbox Series X. Despite the performance improvements, the high price tag means many consumers don’t see the need to upgrade. New features like ray tracing and facial animation require advanced and expensive chips, and component prices haven’t come down over time.
Both Sony and Microsoft are changing strategies with the game console market.
Meanwhile, after giving up the race in 2001 with the GameCube, Nintendo has found success with the Nintendo Switch, which, while not the most powerful, has attracted a large audience. Nintendo's device development director Ko Shiota stressed that creating a high-priced product does not necessarily mean a better idea, and that the company will continue to focus on developing products based on collaboration between hardware and software teams.
Both Sony and Microsoft are adjusting their strategies as gamers' console buying habits change. Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida says success is not just about sales, but also about the time gamers spend playing games. Microsoft, meanwhile, is shifting away from expensive consoles and toward attracting users through apps across multiple devices, along with its Xbox Game Pass Ultimate service that gives access to dozens of cloud-based games.
With what is happening, when the game console market is going through major changes, manufacturers need to find new directions to attract consumers in the context of increasingly fierce competition.
