Nearly 90% of the killings of environmental activists worldwide in 2022 occurred in Latin America, with Colombia, Brazil and Mexico considered the most dangerous.
The latest report by Global Witness, a non -governmental organization that monitors environmental protection, said that of the 177 environmental activists killed last year, 88% were killed in Latin America, a region that includes four sub-regions: North America (Mexico), the Caribbean, Central America and South America .
In this report, Ms. Laura Furones, Senior Coordinator of Global Witness, said that this is a heartbreaking truth when on average, every 2 days, 1 environmental activist is killed, despite the fact that they are completely harmless individuals, unarmed and unable to defend themselves.
Since Global Witness began tracking the killings of environmental activists 11 years ago, Latin America has consistently seen the most cases, according to Furones.
Explaining the above reasons, the Senior Coordinator of Global Witness said that due to possessing the most diverse and abundant natural resources in the world, Latin America is a region with the presence of many international and local environmental protection organizations.
In addition, environmental activists here are always considered to have high professional qualifications, enthusiasm and dedication to their work.
According to Global Witness, in the period 2012-2022, worldwide, 1,910 environmental activists died while performing their duties./.
