Attach QR code at the beginning of the alley to make the village like a city

Aiming at smart rural areas, Hung Nhon Village Chief (Hai Phong Commune, Hai Lang District) Nguyen Nhu Khoa has initiated QR codes attached to the ends of alleys. These QR codes not only locate addresses to help find addresses easily but also update the number and location of households in each alley, which is very convenient.

Many benefits from one meaningful initiative

Smart cities are made possible by the widespread application of information technology, artificial intelligence and data in government management and operations as well as in infrastructure operations, serving all areas from production, business to people's daily lives. So why can't the countryside be as smart as cities in the current 4.0 technology era? That question keeps haunting Nguyen Nhu Khoa's mind and the responsibility of a village chief forces him to find the answer.

And then the answer came by chance when Mr. Khoa organized a meeting to celebrate his 20th anniversary of military service in his village in 2024. “When my friends asked for directions to the venue in Hung Nhon, at first I immediately thought of drawing a map and sending it like people often do in wedding invitations, or transferring the location via Zalo. But this method was not very optimal, so I thought I had to do something better. So the QR code was born,” Mr. Khoa said.

But QR codes are only needed for people living far away, while people living in Hung Nhon do not need them. So Mr. Khoa thought of putting the number of households and the length of the updated alley into the QR code. He immediately asked the brothers at Hai Lang District Youth Union to guide him in making the QR code and drew a map of the village himself to update. After completing it, he sent it to Da Nang to order the making of boards with QR codes. Each board costs 120,000 VND from the village's budget and some people's support.

“These QR code printed boards are made of stainless steel and are highly durable. The board has 2 QR codes, one integrating detailed information about the location and number of 275 households, the length of the alley, the location of public works such as schools, markets, pagodas, communal houses, churches, etc.; the other displays geographic coordinates. All 16 alleys in the village have been assigned QR codes since April 2025,” Mr. Khoa introduced.

New direction for smart countryside

Mr. Nguyen Nhu Khoa was born in 1982. In 2004, he joined the military . After two years of completing his service, he returned to his hometown to make a living and participate in mass organization activities. Dynamic, creative, and enthusiastic, in 2015 he was elected by the people as village chief. Over the past 10 years, in addition to the time spent working at the small photo shop in front of Hai Hoa market, Mr. Khoa has always strived to fulfill his responsibilities as a village chief.

When he first became the village chief, Mr. Khoa initiated the construction of the alley gate and named the alley. “At that time, each household contributed 100,000 VND, and the people did the construction themselves. Naming the alley makes it easier to manage the area and also makes it convenient to find contact addresses. Moreover, naming the alley helps people rely on it for their activities and efforts, for example, which alley is cleaner,” Mr. Khoa shared.

Mr. Khoa's initiatives have contributed to changing the face of the countryside in Hung Nhon, and have been recognized and welcomed by the people. "Since the QR code was introduced, it has been very convenient, especially for delivery people. Every house in the alley has a location on the QR code, making it very convenient to do business. Before, when the alley number was attached, it was convenient, now with the QR code it is even more convenient, finding the way is easier than in the city. This is an initiative of the village leader. The people really welcome it," commented Mr. Nguyen Duc Phu in Alley 11.

Sharing the same thought, Mr. Nguyen Duc Tri in Alley 6 said: “Currently, many people buy things online, this QR code helps delivery staff save time finding addresses. Or funerals can send QR codes to distant friends so they can come and attend, very convenient. Even my family now wants to sell rice to traders far away, just send the QR code and they will come right away. Mr. Khoa's initiative is very meaningful, useful for the village."

Walking around Hung Nhon, we heard many interesting stories about the QR code attached to the alley of the village. For example, the other day, a family was surprised and did not understand why the electronics employee came to deliver the goods to them and read the correct address. It turned out that the son who works far away ordered online and then gave the QR code to the delivery employee. A wedding in the village just took place, the invitation card had a QR code printed on it so that guests from far away could easily find their way to the event...

It can be said that the initiative of Village Chief Nguyen Nhu Khoa is truly unique and convenient. Some people jokingly but truly said: digitalization has reached every alley and every house in the countryside. Or in other words, it is digital transformation in the countryside. Attaching QR codes to locate the alleys is opening a new direction for smart countryside.
