In recent times, the Provincial Department of Population and district, town and city health centers have actively coordinated with localities to carry out many activities to disseminate, advise and guide women of childbearing age on measures to take care of their health during pregnancy.

Maintain and implement prenatal and newborn screening in the area, focusing on activities such as: giving talks to pregnant women; organizing ultrasound and prenatal screening through reproductive health care campaigns; organizing training courses to improve population communication capacity for population collaborators at the grassroots level, especially in remote, mountainous areas, ethnic minorities with difficult economic and social conditions... Thereby contributing to ensuring the health of mothers and children, improving and enhancing population quality, building a healthy and developed community.

According to Ms. Le Thi Trinh, Hai Thai commune, Gio Linh district, since she was 7 months pregnant, her husband regularly took her to the obstetrics and gynecology clinic in Dong Ha city for a routine check-up once a month.

During prenatal checkups, Ms. Trinh's health was checked by medical staff using blood and urine tests, weight monitoring, heart rate and blood pressure measurement, uterine height and abdominal circumference check, and ultrasound... to monitor the mother's health and the baby's development.

“During my regular prenatal check-ups, the doctor advised me on the timing of prenatal screening tests and how to change my diet to ensure vitamins, minerals, and nutrition for both mother and baby, especially in the last 3 months of pregnancy. In addition to the diet, the doctor also prescribed and instructed me on how to use some medications during pregnancy, so I felt very secure,” Trinh shared.

According to the recommendations of the health sector, pregnant women need to have regular check-ups at least 4 times during the three stages of pregnancy at a medical facility to be managed and monitored for the health of the mother and fetus; to be advised on pregnancy care, and to be fully prepared for a safe birth. In addition, pregnant women need to go for a check-up when they have one of the following abnormal symptoms: abdominal pain, bleeding, vaginal discharge, edema, headache, dizziness, blurred vision, etc.

Pregnancy and giving birth to a healthy, safe baby is what every family desires, but not 100% of pregnant women are fortunate enough to receive this blessing. However, with the rapid development of medicine today, there are many effective methods to treat some congenital malformations in babies immediately after birth. Therefore, regular prenatal checkups will help detect congenital malformations in the fetus early while still in the womb, which is very important in treating the child's illness later.

Sharing his experience in taking care of pregnant women's health, Dr. Tran Trung Hoanh, Deputy Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Quang Tri General Hospital, informed that pregnant women need to have regular check-ups and perform screening tests for fetal malformations as well as pregnancy-related diseases.

If pregnant women do not go for regular prenatal check-ups, they will not be able to monitor their health, detect and promptly treat existing diseases or diseases related to pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes; miss the opportunity to assess fetal development; fail to monitor whether fetal development is appropriate or not; miss screening and detection of congenital malformations, chromosomal abnormalities; do not receive preventive treatment for diseases transmitted from mother to child...

“Therefore, pregnant women should follow a regular pregnancy check-up schedule, perform all prenatal screening tests, and discuss any health problems they encounter with their doctors. Early detection and timely treatment of health problems during pregnancy will help minimize risks, ensuring a safe and healthy pregnancy,” said Dr. Hoanh.

Although currently, the care and management of maternity health is of concern to women, families and society. However, there are still some people who do not fully understand the process of prenatal examination at important milestones, so it is difficult to screen for risks to mother and baby.

Especially now, there are many sources of information on the internet and social networks about nutrition as well as advertising functional foods for mothers and babies, but not all information is accurate.

Therefore, pregnant women need to know how to select, research, and consult official sources of information from medical specialists and reputable medical facilities, and avoid following unverified information and word of mouth that lacks scientific basis.

Along with regular prenatal check-ups, pregnant women need to follow the obstetrician's instructions on nutrition, supplement vitamins, minerals..., and get vaccinated. At the same time, they need to practice a healthy lifestyle to ensure the health of themselves and their fetuses.
