Nestled on the coast, about 35 km north of Tuy Hoa city center, Ganh Da Dia in An Ninh Dong commune, Tuy An district, is a unique basalt rock beach, formed from volcanic activity about 200 million years ago in the Van Hoa plateau, north of Phu Yen province. When hot lava from the volcano flows down and meets cold seawater, it quickly solidifies and shrinks, creating vertical and horizontal cracks.
The result is prismatic basalt columns, mostly hexagonal, stacked on top of each other like giant plates. This area is about 50 meters wide and more than 200 meters long, with about 35,000 jet-black, shiny stone columns, creating a majestic scene, like a giant honeycomb in the middle of the ocean. From a distance, the stone columns undulate among the waves, shining mysteriously black under the sunlight, making anyone admire the creativity of nature.
Not only valuable in terms of landscape, Ganh Da Dia is also a living "geological museum". Scientists consider this to be one of the most beautiful basalt reefs in the world, comparable to famous rock wonders such as Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland or Fingal's Cave in Scotland. In 1997, Ganh Da Dia was recognized as a National Scenic Monument and on December 31, 2020, the Prime Minister ranked this place as a special national monument, affirming the timeless value of this wonder.
Near the rocky beach, people built Da Dia Tomb, a place to worship the god Nam Hai (Ca Ong) - the god who protects fishermen in the sea. The tomb was built during the reign of King Tu Duc (mid-19th century) and is where traditional fishing and harvest festivals take place.
On holidays, fishermen gather, sing Ba Troi, release dragon boats and offer offerings to pray for a year of favorable weather and a boat full of fish and shrimp. These cultural features not only enrich the value of Ganh Da Dia but also create a special spiritual space, attracting tourists who want to learn about the lives of coastal people. In addition, festivals here are also an opportunity for tourists to experience folk culture, enjoy traditional dances and feel the people's attachment to the sea.
A colleague of ours at Phu Yen Newspaper shared that to become the famous destination it is today, Ganh Da Dia had to go through a long journey. Previously, this place was just a wild, little-known rocky beach, mainly visited by local fishermen. Since being recognized as a National Scenic Monument in 1997, Ganh Da Dia began to attract the attention of tourists and researchers.
Every year, Ganh Da Dia welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors. Coming here, visitors can not only admire the unique basalt stone pillars but also enjoy the fresh air, listen to the murmuring waves and watch the sunset over the sea. The shiny black rocks, interspersed with the blue of the sea and the white of the foam, create a beautiful natural picture, ideal for taking "check-in" photos. Many visitors share that the moment of standing on the cliff, feeling the sea breeze blowing through and listening to the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks is an unforgettable experience, bringing a sense of peace, relaxation and closeness to nature.
To facilitate tourists, the locality has invested in building infrastructure such as roads, parking lots, etc. The entrance fee is only about 20,000 - 40,000 VND/person, very reasonable to experience a majestic natural landscape. The ideal time to visit Ganh Da Dia is from March to September, when the weather is dry, sunny, convenient for traveling and sightseeing.
However, due to the rugged rocky terrain, visitors should wear soft-soled shoes for easy movement. In addition to Ganh Da Dia, visitors can combine visiting surrounding places such as Ganh Den Lighthouse, Mang Lang Church or Bai Bang... These places are all located on the coastal road, very convenient to explore in one day.
In addition, when coming to Ganh Da Dia, visitors should not miss the opportunity to enjoy fresh seafood at nearby Bai Bang. Dishes such as O Loan blood cockles, ocean tuna, lobster, and Cu Mong lagoon crab are simply prepared but full of the flavor of the sea.
A meal by the beach, enjoying seafood while watching the waves is an experience that any tourist should try. If you want to buy specialties as gifts, dried beef, dried tuna, or Hoa Da rice paper are great choices, both delicious and full of Phu Yen's unique characteristics. These gifts are not only food but also a way to bring a part of Phu Yen's flavor home.
