Dak Nong avocado price peaks but crop failure

Avocado prices unexpectedly increased again in the 2025 harvest. However, this year's avocado crop failed, causing many Dak Nong gardeners to regret.

In early May 2025, in many avocado gardens in Dak Nong province, instead of being bustling during the season like every year, it is now quite quiet. Farmers have not yet had time to rejoice because avocado prices have increased again, but they are heartbroken because the yield has decreased sharply, many gardens have almost lost everything.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, village 8, Quang Khe commune, Dak Glong district (Dak Nong) said that avocado prices have fluctuated erratically for many years. He used to sell avocados for 120,000 VND/kg, and also sold avocados for 2,000 VND/kg.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tuan, village 8, Quang Khe commune, Dak Glong district is one of the pioneer households growing avocado 034 since 2011.

With more than 300 avocado trees, in previous years he harvested more than 20 tons of fruit per crop, but this year he expects to only harvest about 10 tons, half the average of previous years.

“The weather this year is not favorable, when the avocados are blooming, there is strong wind and unseasonal rain. In addition, for many years, the price of avocados has been so low, sometimes only 2,000 VND/kg, that I dare not invest in care like before. The avocado trees grow by eating fertilizer from coffee and pepper in the garden. This year, the price is high, but the crop is bad,” Mr. Tuan shared.

Avocado trees are intercropped with coffee, pepper... by many households in Dak Nong.

The family of Ms. Le Thi Kim Lien, in Hamlet 17, Nhan Co Commune, Dak R'lap District, has more than 200 avocado trees 034 planted for more than ten years. Last year, the avocado garden yielded about 20 tons, but this year it is estimated to yield less than 2 tons.

Ms. Lien said that when the avocado trees were flowering, sudden rains and strong winds affected their ability to bear fruit. Some trees in the garden did not bear any fruit. “This time last year, I sold several hundred kilograms, but this year I have not brought any fruit to the market. It is true that the price is good but the harvest is bad. The price is high but there is no product to sell,” Ms. Lien said sadly.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Dak Nong province, Dak Nong currently has about 13,000 hectares of avocado, most of which are intercropped with coffee and pepper gardens. The average avocado output in recent years in Dak Nong has reached about 60,000 tons/year. However, this year, due to unfavorable weather, many production areas have recorded a sharp decrease in output, with some places even experiencing almost total losses.

Currently, the price of early season 034 avocado ranges from 18,000 - 36,000 VND/kg, depending on quality and purchasing location. This price is considered the best in recent years.

But paradoxically, due to crop failure, many gardeners have no products to sell. Initial consumption is not very favorable because the output mainly depends on traders and spontaneous markets.

Dak Nong avocado consumption depends heavily on small traders.

Avocado trees were once considered the main crop in the restructuring of crops in Dak Nong. Thanks to the suitable climate and good soil, Dak Nong avocados are of high quality and were once favored by the market, especially 034 and Booth avocados. However, in recent years, avocado trees have gradually lost their position due to unstable prices, unstable output, and lack of post-harvest processing and preservation channels.

Faced with this year’s crop failure, many farmers hope that the authorities will have a long-term solution for avocado trees, from care techniques to support for consumption, deep processing and finding stable output. Building a chain of links, applying science and technology, and forecasting the market are also key factors to help avocado trees develop sustainably.

Reality shows that if there is drastic participation from all levels and sectors along with close connection between businesses and growers, avocado is still a potential crop that can bring high economic value to Dak Nong farmers in the coming time.
