Robusta coffee prices on the ICE Futures Exchange rose sharply as the market reacted to news of harvest delays in Vietnam. Vietnam is the world’s largest producer of robusta, so any disruption to the harvest is a concern for traders. Heavy flooding and prolonged rains in recent days have made it difficult to assess the extent of damage, adding to pressure on global coffee supplies.
Rainfall exceeding 1,500 mm in just three days has left much of the central region, a major coffee producer and home to many popular beaches, at high risk from storms and floods. Rising waters are hampering harvesting, washing away fallen coffee cherries, leaving farmers at risk of crop failure. Some traders fear continued rain will reduce the quality of the beans.
Bloomberg reports that heavy rains are slowing the harvest in Dak Lak, the country’s largest coffee-growing province. Further rains are likely to cause serious damage to crops. Some small farms have been flooded, trees have fallen, and the prolonged rains are making farmers nervous. In Krong Bong, farmer Winh Mlo said if the flooding continues, the roots of the trees could rot and the coffee cherries that are close to harvest could be severely damaged.
Vietnam’s key coffee growing regions have been hit by strong storms and heavy rains in recent times. Weather forecasts show conditions in Dak Lak and surrounding areas are expected to worsen over the weekend, adding to the risk to coffee production in the world’s top robusta exporter.

US President Donald Trump signed an executive order to remove an additional 40% tariff on many food products imported from Brazil, including coffee, beef and fruit. This is part of an effort to reduce food prices in the US, as the Washington administration is under pressure from surveys showing voters are dissatisfied with Mr. Trump's handling of inflation and the economy. The White House said the expanded list of exemptions is based on "early progress" in the trade negotiations between the US and Brazil.
The tariff cuts are seen as a major victory for Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Items such as bananas, pine nuts and orange juice are again included in the new exemption list, bringing the exemptions to about two-fifths of Brazil’s total exports to the US. The change comes less than a week after the US reduced reciprocal tariffs on a range of agricultural products not grown domestically, in an effort to cool food prices.
According to Mr. Thiago de Aragão, CEO of Arko International in Washington, the US decision has many domestic political factors. Previously, Mr. Trump imposed a 40% tax on Brazilian goods, arguing that this country has a trade deficit with the US. When adding a 10% reciprocal tax, the total tax rate reaches 50%, increasing diplomatic tensions between the two largest economies in the Americas.
In addition to the tariff relief for Brazil, US officials last week announced “framework” trade agreements with Argentina, Ecuador, Guatemala and El Salvador. These agreements are expected to include tariff reductions on many popular food products, paving the way for more detailed negotiations in the coming time.
