Vegetable prices increase sharply due to prolonged cold rain

According to a survey at major markets in the city such as Hoa Cuong wholesale market, Dong Da market, and Moi market, in recent days, prices of spices and green vegetables have increased sharply compared to last week. Wholesale vegetable prices have increased 2-3 times compared to normal.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Tuan, Head of Hoa Cuong Wholesale Market Management Board, informed that the prices of local vegetables imported from vegetable growing areas in Da Nang and Quang Nam increased by 200-250% compared to last week due to cold and rainy weather, the output to the market was less than usual; the prices of vegetables imported from Gia Lai and Da Lat provinces increased by 150-180%. Specifically, at Hoa Cuong Wholesale Market, local vegetables such as water spinach cost 35,000 - 37,000 VND/kg; Malabar spinach and mustard greens cost 40,000 - 42,000 VND/kg; Malabar spinach costs 9,000 - 10,000 VND/kg; sweet potato leaves cost 15,000 - 17,000 VND/kg; bitter melon is currently at 55,000 - 60,000 VND/kg.

Vegetables imported from Lam Dong and Gia Lai provinces also increased in price, Malabar spinach is priced at 26,000 - 28,000 VND/kg, Da Lat sweet cabbage is priced at 30,000 - 32,000 VND/kg; bitter melon is priced at 30,000 - 32,000 VND/kg... Although the quantity of goods arriving at Hoa Cuong wholesale market is relatively stable, according to vegetable and onion traders, due to the cold and rainy weather for many days now, some vegetable growing areas in Hoa Vang district and some neighboring districts of Quang Nam province have been affected, causing damage and decreasing output.

The retail prices of vegetables in many markets have increased compared to before, such as water spinach, sweet potato leaves, mustard greens, and amaranth, increasing from VND10,000/bunch to VND15,000 - 20,000/bunch. The prices of spices such as green onions have increased from VND25,000/kg to VND35,000 - 40,000/kg; basil and cinnamon are priced from VND100,000/kg or more, 2-3 times higher than usual. For root vegetables and fruits such as Dalat carrots, eggplants, potatoes, etc., prices are stable and have not increased.
