Durian price today

According to the update this morning (August 7), durian prices in two key regions, the Southwest and Southeast, tend to increase slightly:

The price of beautiful RI6 durian in the Southwest increased by 2,000 VND, to 40,000 - 42,000 VND/kg.

Thai durian in bulk increased sharply by 2,000 - 3,000 VND, reaching 40,000 - 43,000 VND/kg.

In the Southeast, the price of selected RI6 also increased by 2,000 VND, trading in the range of 40,000 - 44,000 VND/kg.

Notably, Thai durian purchased in bulk in this area increased sharply by 4,000 VND, reaching 40,000 - 45,000 VND/kg.

Meanwhile, some other types such as RI6 and Thai durian remain stable in price or slightly decrease by 1,000 VND/kg.

Contrary to the increasing trend in the West and Southeast, the Central Highlands durian market recorded a clear decrease:

Beautiful RI6 reduced by 2,000 VND, down to 40,000 - 42,000 VND/kg.

Beautifully selected Thai durian has decreased by 1,000 - 5,000 VND, currently fluctuating between 75,000 - 80,000 VND/kg.

The price of durian in buckets remains the same, except for Thai durian in buckets, which is still priced at 38,000 - 45,000 VND/kg.

This adjustment reflects fluctuations in supply and demand between regions, as well as the impact of weather conditions and durian quality in the current period.

China's durian craze drives investment in Indonesia

According to Global Voices, the recent boom in durian demand from the Chinese market has led to a wave of strong investment in durian growing areas in Indonesia.

“Palu (Central Sulawesi) is the most prominent durian production center in Indonesia, especially the Montong variety. There are about 30 Chinese investors waiting for investment opportunities here,” said durian expert Catur Dian Mirzada.

Although it has not yet achieved global fame like Thai or Malaysian durian, Indonesia has a great geographical advantage in being able to grow and harvest durian all year round thanks to its long stretch across the equator.

According to Professor Awang Maharijaya (Bogor Agricultural University), the small-scale home garden model has gradually shifted to large-scale industrial plantations in the past 10 years, opening up the possibility of direct access to large export markets.

However, both experts agree that Indonesia is still in the early stages of standardizing production, with challenges in quality and consistency. “The challenge is not quantity but quality and consistency,” Mirzada stressed. “We need about 10 more years of development, from farmer education , fertilizer supply, pest control to ensuring plant care.”

With high economic value, flexible harvest times and strong demand from China, the Southeast Asian durian industry is still considered to have great potential. However, to take advantage of this, both growers and exporters need to focus on improving fruit quality, production management and branding of growing areas.

In the short term, domestic durian prices are likely to continue to fluctuate slightly, depending on domestic supply and demand and the quality of fruit from each region.
