Coffee is the crop that Tuan Giao district has pioneered in transforming its crop structure. By the end of 2023, the district will have 614.1 hectares of coffee; of which 325.43 hectares are commercial coffee. Coffee trees are grown in the communes of Toa Tinh, Quai To, Pu Nhung, Muong Thin, Quai Nua... in which the majority of the area is in Toa Tinh commune - where the production area and concentrated raw material area of the district are formed.
In 2023, Toa Tinh commune will have 405.65 hectares of coffee (accounting for nearly 70% of the total coffee area of the district), including: 225.8 hectares of commercial coffee and 179.85 hectares of coffee in the construction phase. Coffee output in 2023 will reach 1,919.3 tons. Currently, coffee has become the main crop and brings economic value to the people of Toa Tinh commune. Income from coffee has helped many households in Toa Tinh not only sustainably reduce poverty but also have "food and savings" and rise up to become rich.
For Toa Tinh people, the last two months of the year are a difficult time but also the happiest time of the year because it is the coffee harvest season, the day to enjoy the fruits after a year of care. In 2023, coffee has a good harvest and good prices, people are very excited. The average coffee price is 12,000 VND/kg, at the peak it reached 15,000 VND/kg. Toa Tinh commune has 7 villages, all of which have grown coffee. The corn, cassava, and upland rice fields of the past have been replaced by coffee trees. Typically, in Hua Sa B village, all 46 households have converted their upland crops to coffee. Small households have a few thousand square meters, large households have planted a few hectares.
Mr. Vu Ga Nenh, Hua Sa B village has over 4 hectares of coffee, of which over 3 hectares are for commercial coffee. Mr. Nenh's family has converted about 3/4 of the family's acreage to grow coffee. The boldness in agricultural production has helped Mr. Nenh's family reap sweet fruits.

Mr. Vu Ga Nenh affirmed: “Coffee trees are very suitable for the soil and climate conditions in Toa Tinh, the trees grow well, have few pests and diseases, and give good yield and quality. The price of coffee changes according to the market every year, but the economic value is many times higher than that of traditional crops. In 2023, I have 3 hectares of coffee for business, producing more than 25 tons of fruit, with an average price of 11,000 VND/kg, I earn nearly 300 million VND.”
Having succeeded with coffee trees, the people of Toa Tinh commune have actively and proactively converted and expanded the area. Households have proactively sourced capital, researched, selected and purchased seedlings for planting. According to data from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuan Giao district, in 2024, Toa Tinh commune planted 247.44 hectares, bringing the total coffee area of the commune to 653.09 hectares.
Mr. Pham Huu Chien, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tuan Giao district said: “The district aims to develop Toa Tinh commune into a specialized production area, a concentrated coffee material area. In the coming time, the district People's Committee will continue to closely guide and support people in coffee planting and care techniques. At the same time, flexibly use capital sources to support people in the process of developing coffee trees in the area.”
In recent years, districts have been actively converting the crop structure on the fields, from ineffective crops to crops with high economic value. For example: Cinnamon planting projects in Muong Cha, Muong Nhe, Nam Po; green squash planting model in Nam Po and Muong Cha districts. The projects and models have initially brought about efficiency and received consensus from the people.

In the past 3 years, Muong Cha district has been converting ineffective upland and single-crop rice fields to growing green squash. To date, the entire district has over 30 hectares of green squash. The first squash crops have shown economic efficiency compared to previous crops. Currently, Muong Cha district is implementing solutions to sustainably develop the squash raw material area.
In Muong Muon commune, after much consideration, in 2022 the People's Committee of the commune implemented a project to grow green squash from the capital of the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction. The project was implemented in Pung Giat 1 and Pung Giat 2 villages on an area of 2.6 hectares, with 10 households participating. After 1 harvest, realizing that green squash was highly economically efficient, the model continued to be replicated by the people. To date, Muong Muon commune has more than 20 hectares of squash. The entire area is covered by Nam Duong Cooperative.
Mr. Quang A Lenh, a resident of Pung Giat 2 village, said: “Previously, people grew one rice crop per year but the yield was low. Switching to growing green squash has changed everything. Each year, we harvest two squash crops, each crop produces 10 fruits. With a selling price of 5,000 - 10,000 VND/kg depending on the time, growing green squash gives a much higher income than growing one rice crop.”

Along with squash, recently Muong Cha district has converted more than 1,500 hectares of ineffective rice land to other crops with high economic value such as: pineapple, potato, macadamia, cinnamon...
In fact, many projects and models of crop restructuring in the province have brought about efficiency and gradually affirmed their economic value. Thanks to the conversion of crop structure in accordance with the actual conditions of each locality and the agricultural production planning, Dien Bien province has formed specialized areas and concentrated raw material areas such as: Coffee in Muong Ang, Tuan Giao; rice in Dien Bien district; fruit trees in Dien Bien, Muong Ang, Tuan Giao districts; tea in Tua Chua district... Thereby gradually completing the goals in the Agricultural Restructuring Project in the province.
