Rebar on the Shanghai Futures Exchange (SHFE) for October 2025 delivery fell 12 yuan to 3,089 yuan/t.

Iron ore futures fluctuated, as favorable near-term supply-demand dynamics countered intense trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies that clouded the demand outlook.

The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) rose 0.07 percent to 707 yuan ($96.79) a tonne.

Benchmark May iron ore (SZZFK5) on the Singapore Exchange gave up gains to trade 0.24% lower at $97.95 a tonne, after hitting its highest since April 10 at $99.25.

Lower supplies due to severe weather in the past quarter, coupled with strong near-term demand, are supporting prices of the key steelmaking ingredient.

BHP Group reported slightly lower third-quarter iron ore production due to the storm. Two other major miners, Rio Tinto and Vale, reported lower first-quarter shipments and production.

Meanwhile, daily crude steel output at member steel mills reached about 2.2 million tonnes in the first ten days of April, up 3.4% from the same period in the previous ten days, data from the state-backed China Iron and Steel Association showed.

China's crude steel output in March jumped 4.6% to a ten-month high of 92.84 million tonnes.

China unexpectedly appointed a new trade negotiator on Wednesday, a key appointment that some market participants interpreted as a positive signal that could potentially ease the escalating tariff war with the United States.

Other steelmaking components on the DCE weakened, with coking coal and coke (DCJcv1) down 2.26% and 1.69%, respectively.

Most steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell. Rebar fell 0.45%, hot-rolled coil fell 0.75%, stainless steel edged down 0.04% while wire rod (SWRcv1) rose 0.27%.
