Vietnam's pepper output in the 2024-2025 crop year is expected to decrease slightly compared to last year, mainly due to a decrease in pepper growing area and unfavorable weather factors caused by climate change, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment.
Despite the decline in output, the current pepper price is bringing high income to farmers. This not only improves their lives but also motivates them to invest and take better care of their gardens. High prices also help farmers proactively stock up, without having to sell massively during harvest, thereby stabilizing the market.
The International Pepper Community noted that the pepper market had mixed developments this week. In India, both domestic and international pepper prices decreased. On the contrary, in Indonesia, pepper prices increased in both markets.
According to a report from Nedspice, Vietnam’s pepper output in 2025 is expected to decrease by about 2% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, India’s pepper output is forecast to decline more sharply, due to bad weather in the state of Karnataka. Brazil also gave an initial estimate that pepper output next year will reach about 85,000 to 90,000 tons.
In Cambodia, the Khmer Times reported that black pepper farmers in Samlot district, Battambang province, are enjoying a huge profit as prices have nearly doubled compared to last year. Currently, the local price of dried black pepper is between 25,000 and 28,000 riel (about 6.25 to 7 USD/kg), compared to 16,000 riel (4 USD/kg) last year.
Mr. Suem Sovann, a farmer in Sung commune, said that the price increase has significantly improved his family's finances. He affirmed that pepper farming is the main occupation of many households in the area. It is noteworthy that traders now come to farmers' homes to buy, despite the geographical location near the Thai border. This reflects strong domestic consumption. Pepper is then transported to Phnom Penh and exported to neighboring countries.
Samlot black pepper is favored by consumers for its natural quality. Farmers here do not use chemicals to increase productivity, helping to retain the characteristic flavor and increase the product's value in the market.
