World gold price today May 16, 2025 and world gold price fluctuation chart in the past 24 hours
According to Kitco, the world gold price recorded at 2:30 p.m. today, Vietnam time, was 3,207.55 USD/ounce. Today's gold price increased by 44.8 USD/ounce compared to yesterday. Converted according to the USD exchange rate at Vietcombank (26,110 VND/USD), the world gold price is about 102.03 million VND/tael (excluding taxes and fees). Thus, the price of SJC gold bars is 16.64 million VND/tael higher than the international gold price.
World gold prices began to decline again after a sharp increase this morning, and recorded the sharpest weekly decline in half a year, due to the increase in the US dollar and the decrease in concerns about the trade war, causing gold to lose its appeal as a safe haven asset.
Specifically, the spot gold price increased by 1.42%, down slightly from the 1.95% increase this morning. For the whole week, gold lost more than 3% of its value, the sharpest decline since November 2024. Meanwhile, the price of gold futures in the US also decreased slightly by 0.1% to 3,224.4 USD.
The dollar rose 0.2% this week, marking its fourth consecutive weekly gain. The stronger dollar makes gold, which is priced in dollars, more expensive for foreign investors.
According to Mr. Ilya Spivak, market analyst at Tastylive, gold prices were under strong selling pressure this week due to the market being more optimistic after the US and China agreed to temporarily reduce tariffs imposed from April. This move helps ease trade tensions between the world's two largest economies.
In addition, US economic data also contributed to the decline in gold prices. Producer prices unexpectedly fell in April, while retail sales growth slowed. Consumer inflation also increased less than expected, suggesting that price pressures are under control.
Michael Barr, a member of the US Federal Reserve (Fed), said the US economy remains stable with inflation approaching the 2% target. However, global trade policy still has many uncertainties.
Although gold prices have fallen, according to Tim Waterer, a market analyst at KCM Trade, gold still attracts investors to buy every time it falls sharply, proving that the demand for shelter is still high because the outlook for global growth and inflation is not really clear.
Demand for physical gold in Asian markets also increased this week as prices fell, stimulating buyers.
Besides gold, other precious metals such as silver, platinum and palladium also decreased in price. Specifically, silver decreased 0.7% to 32.44 USD/ounce, platinum decreased 0.3% to 986.35 USD and palladium lost 1.2% of its value to 957.20 USD.
